Allowing some of these didn't play much (if any) Test cricket for certain reasons:

Barry Richards
Jimmiy Cook (had it all to be a star)
Herbie Taylor
Graeme Pollock
Jaques Kallis
Aubrey Faulkner
Mike Procter
'Jock' Cameron (wk)
Shaun Pollock
Hugh Tayfield
Alan Donald

If not Cook maybe Taylor to open, Kallis up to 3 and Dave Nourse Junior or Roy McLean at 5.

I'd probably go for Kepler Wessels opening with Richards
(though yeah, I know he played for both Australia & SA)

Eddie Barlow would also be a strong contender...
and Basil D'Oliveira deserves a worthy mention
(even though he became a British citizen and played for England)
but yeah, you then end up getting into Tony Greig & Bob Woolmer (etc) territory...
though neither of those would get in the best 11 team anyway, imo.

Would be nice to get Jonty Rhodes in there,
definitely as 12th man anyway (just so he can come on as a fielder).

No place for poor old Hansie Cronje though ;)
Though I'll give Ali Bacher a mention, and Clive Rice too....

I often wonder how Kenny McEwan would have fared had he played test cricket. He was great when he played for Essex.

I can't get Clive Rice into the team, but this side has many bowling options as well as a strong batting line up.

    Barry Richards
    Eddie Barlow
    Herbie Taylor
    Graeme Pollock
    Jaques Kallis
    Aubrey Faulkner
    Mike Proctor
    Denis Lindsay ( wkt)
    Peter Pollock
    Reggie Shwarz
    Alan Donald

Also Brian Davison, the Zimbabwean who played for Leicestershire. Very fine player.

Dave Houghton would likely have been outstanding as well.
