Are Richard Allinson's overnight shows the best in the UK?

His weekend sat and sunday 3-6am shows really have a great mix of music and chat ideally tuned to the hour. Is there anyone doing a better job?

ie in that time slot

In answer to your question no and far from it.

Allinson is totally over rated on here. He is a good jock but nothing special. Large commercial stations are full of Allinsons. A very good solid jock or what you might call a safe pair of hands.

I think you vastly underrate his skill as a dj

Probably the best National Radio Show by far and one of the UK's best DJ's. He was good at Capital. Shame he was never given another weekday show at the station or anywhere else?

Totally agree with Station ID. Solid but bland. Alex Lester is much, much better. Allinson sounds smarmy to me.

Seeing as most other stations at that time are voicetracked for just non stop music then it's not a hard act to beat really.

Solid and professional guy though, always a decent listen.

I can't stand either Lester or Allinson and can never understand why they have such fanatical followers on here. I often leave my radio running on the Sleep timer late at night but always ensure it switches off before either programme starts.

At least with Allinson you get what he's talking about. Lester's show is claptrap from start to finish.

I'd prefer automation to Allinson personally. At least you don't get the cringe factor.

Trouble is what he's talking about is generally dull.

I'm not a big fan of Lester either and think he's stuck in the past.

And to me, it's a style that sounds outdated and somewhat patronising. I do like him when he is presenting documentaries or doing a solely music based show.

Why do so many anoraks idolise dull, bland, dated-sounding DJs?

People like the old style DJ who regenerate themselves and dont try to be bigger than they are. That's why they have so many follows like Richard A. I could name a few more, but wont make anyone blush including myself.

I liked his late night shows, and when he dept for JW he was fine. He suited filling in for Wogan more than he does for Evans, I find Evans too OTT for me in a morning, but even when RA sits in I won't tune back, as i have moved on to other networks. It appears my R2 listening is restricted to specialist and weekend shows now.

To be fair it's not exactly original to Simon either.

Richard is very good at 'looking after things' for others.
He is very competent but bland and does not pose any threat to those whose things he looks after.

Not when he first started covering for Chris. The media were right over it.

I think he does, he's certainly a big apologist for them on here!>:(>:(

Obviously doesn't think before hitting the keyboard by using the words "dull" and "bland" to have a dig....

Only one group in radio that's dull and bland......
