I wouldn't worry about it. The training exercise in Poland is the US flexing a muscle - and that is all it will feasibly do. There will not be a ground war involving NATO troops in Ukraine. Also airspace infringements happen a lot more often than you'd expect.

Who would benefit from such a war?

None of the major powers, that's for sure, so they wont let it happen.

There is no taste for a war in Europe, people have had enough of Iraq and Afghanistan, however the similarities to WW2 are frightening. We let Germany take over Austria, and Checkoslovakia by appeasement but then went to war over Poland. If we had stepped in sooner then perhaps Hitler would have pulled back and WW2 never happened.

    Oh nooooooooooooo!!!! Not again!! >:(>:(

Another loopy thread with total inability of OP to comprehend the difference between international airspace and UK airspace.

Listen up here and read (i will print in big letters...they are called capitals....to make it easier for you to read).

THE RUSSIAN MILITARY AIRCRAFT WERE IN INTERNATIONAL AIRSPACE......NOT IN UK AIRSPACE.

Instead of reading rubbish from the Daily Tale look at links for Guardian, Times, Independent or even the BBC.
He said: "The aircraft were subsequently identified as Russian military aircraft. The Russian military aircraft remained in international airspace at all times as they are perfectly entitled to do so."

The spokesman added that Russian military flights have never entered UK sovereign airspace without authorisation.

OP, one quote from the BBC link which might reassure you is:

RAF fighter planes were scrambled to incidents such as this eight times last year, an MOD spokesman said.

The only reason it's being sensationalised now is the Ukraine business. If it wasn't for that, it would be yet another non-event, as the 8 were last year.

all these sarcastic replies that have been posted .....will you be laughing once u get enlisted ?? i would love it if this thread proved to be correct.

this is a worrying time indeed. we do not have the military strength at all these days to fight . this is no laughing matter.

what is a russian war ship doing in our waters? . these russian BEARS that have been flying near us .. near holland. near japan .

they had to be escorted away 5 days in a row from japan airspace.

I'm more inclined to think that the current tensions in SE Asia are a greater danger. There's more bad blood there.

Russia/Nato is a really just brinkmanship at the moment.

Wouldnt happen, this is not the 1910s where people were fooled into thinking thier country needed them. Or the 1940s where you were seen as a coward if you did not fight.

The world has changed, this is not our fight nothing to do with us. I will not be going to offer my life for some warmongeing government, who a best buddies with the americans. There will be thousands who think simllar too.

I agree it is a concern, but war or no war I cannot see anyone being enlisted in this day and age.

It would be interesting to see whose side people wanted to be on for a start.

For sure, it's not our fight. Though they could easily make it our fight if they wanted to. All it would take is a direct attack on UK soil. If the worst came to the worst, do you seriously think we wouldn't have American soldiers knocking on our doors to drag us out to fight?? The same people own this country as do the USA. Though it won't get to that stage, I'm fairly sure of that... but you can never rule it out.

There are several reasons why it wont happen.

For a start do not under estimate the will of the public. Cameron, unlike Blair, knows he cannot go to war today without the agreement of Parliament and the agreement of us lot. As Syria showed Parliament is very unlikely to vote for direct involvement, there is little appetite for it amongst MPs and amongst us, the public at large.

Russia is a major World power, and if we and/or the US directly intervened Russia would have little hesitation in retaliating by ordering their own troops to cross the border en masse. . Obama and Cameron know this, Putin knows they know this.

Putin did much the same in South Ossettia in Georgia, which was a very similar situation. We blustered and moaned, and didn't intervene there either.

Ukraine is not a member of Nato. If Russia directly invaded a former member of the USSR that is now part of Nato then Nato (which includes us) would retaliate, because we would be duty bound to do so. That's not the case with Ukraine.

Laughing? I'd be splitting my sides!!

I'm nearly 64 so even Dads Army wouldn't be interested in an old fart like me.

what is a russian war ship doing in our waters?
It wasn't in our waters. Like the military jets it was sailing in international waters off the top of Scotland which it is perfectly and legally entitled to do.

Do you understand the difference between UK waters and international?

While I'd certainly agree that the Brits no longer have the lemming mind set that young men had in WW1, where they couldn't wait to jump in a trench to get blown away by the Hun, (probably because of their dreary, boring existence in northern mills, and factories and mines elsewhere in Britain), nor would many of them give a toss about being given a white feather for not flocking to the colours as many did in 1939.
Please God that you are right, and it never comes to it, but if conscription is introduced, and you, or anyone, says "Screw that!", there will be a gazillion police storm troopers coming round to drag you to the training grounds and shove a rifle in your hands.
The only way out then would be to throw your gun away and hope that the government realise that they can't shoot everyone for not wanting to go, or they'd have insufficient troops to send to any war.

Course they would! They'd love you! You'd be dragged into going out in the rain at night wearing a motorbike helmet or something and making sure all the windows had blackout curtains drawn. I'd be knitting socks for t'lads on t'front line, probably.

Actually, these blackout curtains - would we have to buy our own?

    Hmmm.

Mass annihilation to prove a point? Bit extreme?

I'm not a tin hat merchant, but I was only saying last eve that I think there will be another world war in my lifetime. If it's not East vs West, it will be non-Muslim vs Muslim.

We've all got very used to our comfy life in the West, and nobody of my generation or younger has any appreciation of war (unless they are a professional soldier). We're likely to appease as long as we can get away with it, but at some point we are going to defend our free way of life.
