Lauren Booth 'down with hip hop'

The most uncomfortable moment yet - I'm convinced she listened to nothing else for a month beforehand and learned raps to pretend

All that drivel about hanging out with cool people.

Its a type of music, you like it or you don't - it doesn't give you some special sort of credibility and its really nothing to boast on and on about.

    Silly cow.

She'll die of embarrassment when she watches this back. Let's hope it's fairly soon.

She was doing that 'I'm a cool trendy right-on socialist from Islington and I empathise with your non-white heritage and I will treat you as my equal' thing which is a) cringe-making, b) patronising, c) condescending and d) totally fake. Still, at least she was attempting to think of someone other than herself unlike Jan or Scott.

I thought it was brilliant but cringe-worthy. It's not like she's lieing as she knew the words to the songs etc. I would have died if that was my mum!

Yet... she seems to know more than some ;)

It was actually a UK reggae underground club smash!

Barrington Levy, if I remember correctly... not a tune that you'd hear played much... but a true underground 'street' Old Skool classic :)

Lauren was fine - she knew what she was talking about. Sure, she doesn't fit the model of an urbane hip-hop conoisseur being white, frumpy and middle class, but then so what? What she did, she did authentically and knew full well that some people will be horrified. I thought Ant and Dec were very poor in their response.

I do hate it when it is expected that a certain culture can only be credibly conveyed if it fits a stereotype - bollox to that, I say. (oh, and Lauren is one of my least favourite!) If people are embarrassed, outraged or whatever, that is their problem. As Lauren said, "is it cuz I is white?".

Was it just me - or did she actually say Hip Clop and then correct herself? (I had my fingers in my ears for most of it so I can't be sure :D )

I think you're missing the point. It was her transparent and desperate attempt to show the public that she was 'cool' and hung around with some ' cool' people that they were laughing at.

The thing is, when you spend your life and earn your money criticising and nit picking people for what they do, what they say, who they are seen with etc, then you have to take the flak when it comes back to bite you.

Yes, that is an option. I'm choosing to be fair minded, regardless of her past.

Anyone who has read Lauren's column in NS in the past or seen her on TV ( news, matthew Wright etc.) will have been aware of this part of her past. She's 39 for goodness sake, this music didn't happen yesterday!!! She hasn't always been rich and famous remember. By the time she was in her teens Dad's (a serial shagger and boozer) glory day's were way over. Why shouldn't she have mixed with these crowds and listened to this music?

It's not the fact that she's enjoyed the music, the clubs, and mixed with the people - it's her attitude about it all. It was as embarrassing to watch as Richard Madely's Ali G impression. For someone who has prided herself on hanging out with 'cool' people, it was very uncool. :)

To be fair alot of people didn't realise that she knew a hell of a lot more then they think. Even her patois was very convincing. People feel uncomfortable seeing her do the 'black' thing, but she was actually very good.

Yep, Barrington Levy's 'Here I Come' from 1985 I think - #1 in the UK Reggae chart at the time. Ace.
