Of course, they have denied it, stating philosophical ideas can't be copyrighted, even though they copied almost verbatim apparently.

"True Detective is a work of exceptional originality"

To me, it seemed like a 2 hour movie stretched into a 10 hour mini series (with added softcore porn), not really "exceptional originality" considering that's what they always do. The tagline for the show "man is the cruelest animal". F*** me, are platitudes considered exceptionally original now?!

Hell, even Band Of Brothers, which I heaped praise on back in the day, rode the coattails of Hollywood's 'WW2 epic' productions. If only I knew the direction they would take afterwards (the sex scene later on in the series should have been a clue).

Pick a scene in Game Of Thrones and you can probably find the movie it ripped off, half of it is Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings, add in some Ridley Scott, Uwe Boll, with a dash of porn, soap operas, Troma and Rob Zombie, serve with a side of Braveheart and Robin hood. You end up with a very bizarre creation that leaves a nasty aftertaste.

Don't get me wrong, a lot of stuff rips off other works, but I doubt they will sweep the Emmy awards again this year.

Don't think thats a very fair assesment for Game of thrones, if you've ever watched it you'd see the progression of certain characters from the 1st episode including in particular Tyrion Lannister and Sansa Stark. The people who have been killed off could have been dragged out for years soap opera style but they weren't and some like the red wedding really were shocking.

There are very little original ideas both in the movies and on TV nowadays, its all been done before and just wrapped up a different way.

I for one think Games of Thrones to be one of the best shows on TV, it's just a shame Sky insist on putting Sky Atlantic bumpers in their OnDemand showings of it, completely ruins the mood.

dmuk, I have yet to see a single comment from you that isn't completely ill-informed and idiotic. That sort of consistently is remarkable.

Peter Jackson totally ripped off JRR Tolkien when he made those Lord of the Rings movies. Even the title was the same.......

I agree with the comment about True Detective being a 2-hour movie stretched into a 10-hour TV series. Bored the crap out of me

Well if anyone is at fault it is the writer. If you look at the quotes in question, they are too similar for it to be just coincidence but phrased differently enough that they will be safe legally. HBO is correct in that it us very hard to protect ideas.

Wrong, they both ripped off Tolkien's earlier book the Hobbit, which ripped off a much earlier thing about St George, which had a dragon. Even that was baloney because it ripped off Komodo dragons which really exist, and they ripped off microbes where they got life from.

As for True detective, I heard about real detectives them years ago before HBO existed. Sherlock Holmes smoked opium - I bet they had drugs in the HBO thing. Even Sherlock Holmes was a rip off of the bible cos that had some of the same words in it.
Did you notice the OPs post was word for word exactly duplicated from other web rubbish?

I was just thinking the same thing. But he is good for a laugh though. Like this thread, for example.
