On Twitter, Steve says a hospital doctor referred him to the "glaucoma unit." Has anybody ever seen a whopping big infected eyelid being associated with glaucoma? I thought they were two separate conditions with different symptoms.
It is just an umbrella term to describe an ophthalmic unit. I have a blood disorder and attend the Leicester Haemophilia Centre, but thankfully I don't have haemophilia.
Spelling aside but the punctuation is appalling too. Are we supposed to ignore this sort of thing when using Twitter; I know I wouldn't?
I try my best whenever I am writing anything, anywhere to spell and punctuate as well as I am able.
I think that might be an 'age thing', H. I'm the same.
I don't think youngsters are taught grammar these days. Or, if they are, they don't seem to use it. Correct spelling appears to be optional too.

Just a couple of corrections here: 'Spelling aside, the punctuation is appalling too. Are we supposed to ignore this sort of thing when using Twitter? I know I wouldn't. I try my best - whenever I am writing anything, anywhere - to spell and punctuate as well as I am able.'
John Stapleton is a quality stand in (for any time slot) and LBC are lucky to have his services. But a topic like Stop and Search needs a bit more attitude. The Schoolteacher son of Doreen Lawrence is constantly stopped by Police....just because he is a black man. If I were hosting the show.....my attitude to the topic would be clearly on show.

I think the 'problem' is that Twitter limits you to so many characters, so people try to abbreviate their sentences to fit into a tweet.
Also a lot comes from texting. I believe in the early days of text messages, you were limited to the number of characters you could send. Again for the texter to type in abbreviations is quicker than typing the whole word - but seeing the speed some people text I am surprised it makes much difference!
Good to have the schedule back to normal. I find the subs. rather bland. Especially good to see Ken 'n Dave back on Saturday. Will we be allowed to discuss them on here?
Yes of course! You can say how 'different' one or both sound since their holiday. You will be able to discuss if one is more dominant than the other, ie interrupts more.;-)
However if you want to refer to their discussion on the drop in unemployment or inflation that must go to the Politics thread.

Tricky, ain't it? ;-)
H didn't say he was perfect, Charlie.
He's only human and we wouldn't have him any other way.
Speaking of grammar, the Argos advertisement is a typical culprit: "The washing machine's broke'. It's just spend, spend, spend with those appliances - they should be put on a strict budget.

Ah right. Got it.
Slightly OT - the New York Times obit. of Richard Attenborough refers to him as a 'champagne socialist'
Great radio from James O'Brien this morning. I didn't realise that 'stop and search' was still used so frequently on some people, especially young black men. I wonder if this is racism/ethnic profiling?
Brian is back and within 7 minutes has mentioned he is middle class three times.
The very fact that you refuse to answer the question about why you call him "Brian," instead of "James," kind of shows us that you are embarrassed about it and that is the reason why you won't explain it.

Yes, I take your point. I knew it was wrong when I posted it but somehow wasn't completely awake and alert.
To me that's no worse than Waitrose getting Pippa Middleton to tell me how to make simple food, or to put a tablecloth on the table to make it look nicer!
You make a good point there Kiko, however I find it a bit patronising!

As has been explained, ND - it's just a nickname based on 'O'Brien'. Not a big deal, surely? ;-)

He may be better suited to Radio 4. I find that channel PAINFULLY middle class at times. I have to say the segment of his programme I heard today was an interesting topic and there were no comments about his class or education etc. I do understand how it can be most annoying though.

I'll second that.
Stapleton is nothing but bland filler.
I think I noticed him recently, working on one of the BBC Local stations.
Me too. I like a bit of verbal welly from presenters.

What about 'stop and search' is that politics?

I suggested that last year (tongue in cheek) and was rubbished by the more long-winded among us. I still think it's a good idea.
(enjoying your work on the Jon Gaunt thread) ;-)
Maybe we should have a poll about it - are you able to have a poll within an established thread, I wonder?
Haha, thank you, you can tell I'm not a fan, then?!
