When the cameras panned the spectators at the game last night, there seemed to be a lot of Dutch supporters with various shirts and banners saying 'Holland'

The thing that annoys me is if I say "I went to Holland", and someone corrects me and says "no, you went to the Netherlands. Holland's just a part of the Netherlands". Well yeah, that was the part I went to.

When I say "annoys", it doesn't really. It's happened like once and I wasn't at all bothered. I just wanted to sex it up a little. It's what the internet demands.

Maybe it's a bit like the United Kingdom and England.

    Better tell Van Persie!

He said this after the match: “We have to take it all in and enjoy it, but then focus on Australia, this was an incredible evening for the whole of Holland, but it’s only three points.”

I don't understand this thread. You might as well all be speaking Double Netherhollands.

Actually, the province of Holland has not existed for a long time either. It's now 2 separate provinces of North Holland and South Holland.

Are we going to have a similar thread about America, too?

At least we can say "Russia" these days without causing offence to somebody from Belarus or Azerbaijan.

According to Netherlandish friends of mine, within the context of football, it's perfectly acceptable to refer to the Netherlands national team as Holland, or refer to the country generally as Holland. Even within the Netherlands itself. I know, weird, right ! I think we United Kingdom of Englishers know how to pronounce their football team a little better than they do. :D

Because "nethers sauce" would be a filthy euphemism.

Probably came from the "Holland" part of The Netherlands.

Which is particularly ironic as "England", "Great Britain" and "The United Kingdom" are regularly misused in this country!
