Are the Soap Awards A Joke?

Seems to be a lot of unrest on DS Forums about who won what and this year there does seem to be a lot of 'canvassing' for votes via twitter/facebook etc etc.
So...

Should the soap awards be chosen by a specialist panel of writers/directors/producers/actors etc just like the BAFTAs and the Oscars?

this would surely make awards more credible and allow more soaps to win awards.

Don't get me wrong, I love the soap awards (and all soaps) and think its fantastic to see British Soaps honored and all the casts in one room, but I do think that the idea of 'block voting' and multiple e-mail accounts is really destroying the whole nature of an Awards Show.

What are your thoughts? And please, this is not about my soap didn't win so I'm gonna vent. This is (hopefully) a thread to discuss and not bitch!:D

I do agree. you shouldn't be allowed to create several e-mails. The awards system should go by your IP address.

Even if you could of only voted once, instead of five times, it would of been fairer. :)

The only people who should vote are the viewers. They're the ones who keep the programmes going after all.

Most awards ceremonies are decided by an impartial panel of experts. No reason why the soap awards should be dumbed down and open to blatant corruption.

I think Panel voting can be unfair aswell... No disrespect to Coronation Street, thier anniversary episodes were sensational.. but the panel tend to give the awards to the soap who are celebrating an anniversary that year.
    - no matter how sensational other soaps can be. I'm not an EE viewer but i was VERY surprised the baby swap storyline didn't recieve an award.

    2010 - Eastenders - 25th Anniversary - Won all Panel awards

2011 - Cornation Street - 50th Anniversary - won most of, if not all panel awards.

If this is the way the voting is done, in all fairness, 2013 should see a clean sweep from Emmerdale, as they have thier 40th in October 2012.

Not so much a joke as not to be taken too seriously. Come on this has the "sexiest" award hardly a serious award show. Also if it was more serious things like multiple voting would be cracked down on. So I think its just supposed to be not taken too seriously. Besides we all have our favourites right? Do you really need someone else telling you who to like?

EE got 5 out of 11 panel awards in 2010 and corrie got 8 out of 11 in 2011, but someone pointed out the point of the panel is to make sure no soap goes home empty handed when both Emmerdale and Doctors got no panel awards this year

Its all silly, but its fun to see the bitterness between soap fans who take it super seriously and cry if their favourite doesn't win or bitch about how ungrateful the actual winner is, not to mention the soap actors who also get so bitter about not winning. It's hilarious!

Also why are soap actresses so bad at dressing? They all look like cheap hookers on the hunt for some loser footie player to wine and dine them.

I think equally so for those who go OTT about their fav winning. Do they really need someone else to tell them who their favourite is? It is all far too serious, its hardly the oscars. I know who I like and do not. I do not need a load of people with too much time on their hands telling me. So if someone you like does not win do not be bitter since when did you need someone else to tell you who to like? So both sides needs to take a chill pill.
And yes most of them dress terribly.

I noticed reading over some comments that happened after the show last night about Jessie Wallace, who did seem pretty genuine in her speech and happened to single out an actress who she admired in her category, for some reason that was frowned upon. I saw it as someone being gracious. Did that come from fans of the actress she beat or what?

I have no idea, I can not watch them without doing other things. The show was very dull. From what I saw she seemed pleasant enough. But this is another case of people taking it all too seriously.

    But my favourites were ROBBED!

In the case of the panel-voted awards, it's all down to corruption or stupidity by the judges. In the case of the public votes, it's because the people who voted were too young or too old depending on the direction of the wind. The voters were also too stupid to be taken seriously, yet inexplicably they were clever enough to rig the poll. Whatever the excuse, I DO NOT ACCEPT THAT PEOPLE DISAGREE WITH MY OPINION!:mad::mad:

Of course they're a joke - the votes should be split equally between a panel of "expert" judges and the public. How are the smaller soaps like Doctors and Hollyoaks supposed to compete with Coronation Street and EastEnders when they get a fraction of the audience? The smaller soaps could have a brilliant year, but they'll never walk away with the Best Soap prize because of an unjust voting system,IMO.

If a soap has been exceptional, it deserves to sweep the boards.

Look at Corrie in 2003. For one storyline, it won Best Actor (Brian Capron), Spectacular Scene (Hillman's confession), Villain of the Year (Brian Capron), Best Exit (Brian Capron), Best Storyline (Hillman story).

In addition, Sue Nicholls won Best Dramatic Performance for her part in Hillman driving her insane.

If a storyline deserves to, it should win as much as it deserves. If EastEnders has a brilliant year, it should sweep the board. Same for any of the others.

They should be on merit and merit alone, and judged as a whole in comparison to other soaps. Viewers shouldn't have to vote on that, as very few will watch all the soaps loyally. Of course they'll vote for the one they've seen

Only an impartial, expert panel can deliver awards that truly have value and merit attached to them. Right now, it's less "Best" and more "Most Popular with people inclined to bother".

    Just saying.

It would take more than a 50/50 split between panel and public for a less popular soap such as Doctors or Hollyoaks to ever have a sniff of the Best Soap prize. Emmerdale could benefit, though.

Even if Doctors or Hollyoaks were to win (which would probably require a 75/25 split between panel and public), could you imagine the sour grapes on this forum? These small awards shows don't have the prestige of the BAFTAs or Oscars, so "voted by you" is the only thing that makes them vaguely credible to the public.

That's not really achievable for a cheesy little awards show on primetime ITV. The viewing figures would plummet if people saw a bunch of luvvies patting each other on the back for an episode watched by hardly anyone.

The BSA panel simply does not have the same level of respect as the BAFTA panel.

Overall I think this year was actually one of the fairest years IMO. Corrie deserved its awards for the tram crash but overall didnt deserve best soap as November was it's only really superb week and since then it's been pretty poor

However I think that Lindsay Coulson was robbed even though I think Jane Danson was excellent but Billie's death was of the best episodes of EE i've ever seen

Emmet Scanlon winning best newcomer and villain was spot on as well

Jessie definitely deserved her award and her speech was really nice I though esp to Jane Cox

Shane Richie dragging Marlon from ED up on stage was funny too and it was nice to see friendliness rather than rivalry

I take them as a bit of fun, and not to be taken so seriously, but some people on here do, poor them :D

Also, we all know EastEnders is the Best Soap anyway. ;):p

I don't see why people are getting so worked up about this. They are just awards. They are only a bit of fun, and they should not be taken seriously. On here, you would think that the soaps which didn't win are going to be axed.

On shows like Xfactor, BGT, SCD etc - you can vote as many times as you want for who you think should win - why is this show (and that's all it is) any different
