MAC ibookG4 extra Memory

I have a ibookG4 and was considering upgrading the memory of it currently I have 256MB as standard and want to upgrade to 1GB of memory in order to do this would i have to get rid of the 256MB and buy a complete 1GB? or would I have to buy a 744MB to make up the 1gb?
