Im 20 and i get pretty bad heartburn, its pretty much after anything i eat. I could eat a cherry tomato and get heartburn almost instantly, or take a sip of vodka and the same thing! Just been to the doctors about it and he just pretty much said okay and prescribed me a months supply of Lansoprazole tablets and said after a month to come off them and if the problem comes back to come back and have blood tests.

I was just wondering if anyone else had used these tablets and if they worked for you?

I use Omeprazole, which is basically the same thing. I take one in the morning and that sets me up for the whole day. If I don't take it then my god I suffer.

I've been on and off it for about twelve years after being hospitalised in my early twenties with severe stomach pains - they thought I had appendicitis - where I was given pethadene which didn't touch it.

After three endoscopys over the years, I was eventually diagnosed with excess acid but I would really, really suffer and an attack would sometimes last up to three weeks where I would be in constant agony and not able to sleep. There would be absolutely no let up in the pain. I have turned up at A&E before now begging for pain relief at 3 am :o

I realised that I needed to stay on my Losec tablets permanently because they take too long to work if an attack starts. I've been on them all the time for probably about seven or eight years now and I still take 30 mgs a day which is a high dose (if I have an attack, I sometimes take triple this :o) I have tried to reduce it but it just flares up again. Nothing else works.

I found that missing/waiting to long between meals was my biggest problem - plus binge drinking, which I don't do anymore. I do also avoid fresh orange juice as this seems to make things a lot worse. When I have an attack, I find milk and biscuits do help a little. I also notice that when my diet is crap (lots of junk food, fatty rubbish etc :o) it makes things worse as well. I've been eating pretty heathily for about two years and have hardly had any problems. I haven't had a bad attack for a long time :)

I've been on esomprazole 40mg for the last 10 years and last year for 6 months 80mg, due as most to a hyatus hernia coupled to acute dismotility, as with most very glad to have them only I'm on them for the rest of my life. The main thing is I've been told it isn't cancerous.

I had on/off problems with acid reflux and oesophagitis for 15 years. After an endoscopy the doc originally prescribed Losec (omeprazole) which managed it quite well but then I found that by losing weight, quitting smoking and managing my diet better my symptoms pretty much disppeared. Now I just watch my fat intake and make sure i don't eat too much of the wrong stuff at the wrong time. Fresh orange juice is evil!!

Also, the best stuff I found to take as an instant heartburn/indigestion remedy was Maalox - a swig of that did the trick quicker than any chewy/chalky tablet thingy.

    Hope you're feeling better soon!:)

I have just finished a 2 month supply of Lansoprazole. My doctor advised me to take the full supply, then go and see her. She has halved the dose for a further 4 weeks. I also suffer feeling sick, stomach pains. Okay eating though. Having taken it before, I make sure I finish the lot, otherwise the heartburn comes straight back. Follow the doctors instructions, you are halfway there.

The eating problem I have not had thankfully. Are you taking it exactly as prescribed? Mine says 1 hour before food first thing in the morning. If I do not take it as directed the problems are much worse. Annoying isn't it when something to help part of the digestive system upsets the other part.

Only you can judge, how bad your heartburn was and whether you think that is worth putting up with.

Mine went beyond just heartburn and caused intense pain in the middle of my chest radiating through to my back. I would add once the Lansoprazole has done its job, I can be clear for ages. Only you can decide. If its simple heartburn, once cleared up, then correct diet is the best way forward. Mine is more complicted than that, hence my caution.

    Good Luck.

Ive continued taking it but these abdominal pains are ridiculous now, but there is no way am going to be able to have an appointment with my doctor till late next week at the earliest. I know i should really finish the course but what could be the worst effect of me not doing, or me coming off them to see if i improve? Just getting the heartburn back? I mean some people have 2 weeks prescriptions dont they and some people have 2 months so surely or bodies wouldnt know any different if we didnt finish it? These pains are just doing my head in and id prefer heartburn to be honest :(

Ive just been reading up on it and im getting a bit annoyed actually. I went in and complained that i get heartburn, nothing more than that. The doctor felt my tummy which wasnt tender so he said i wouldnt have an ulcer. Then without doing anything else he just prescribed me 30mg dose of these tablets which what im looking out now is the extreme end of things!

    Hi everyone
My wife has been on lansoprazole for 3 years and yesterday had a benign tumour removed from her outer stomach wall. Surgeon reported seeing some polyps inside her stomach
From what I have found our so far most of these polyps are benign -but some are not ! - but there is evidence to say long term use of anti acids contribute to these polyps forming

I know a couple of specialists in the type of tumour my wife had- a GIST- so I am going to enquire if the anti-acids could have any affect on it forming in the first place

    Any other info appreciated

I've been on Omeprazole (which I guess is basically the same thing under a different brand name as the "prazole" bit of the name is the same?) for heartburn for two months.

And it's great .. I have not had a problem at all in that time.

My husband takes them. He has suufered from heartburn as long as I have known him and now he he doesn't.

I was on it for about 2 years due to awful heartburn/acid etc. I stopped and looked at what I was eating and cut out anything with fat, I stopped eating bread, cakes, biscuits, crisps etc. I also lost over 2 stones. This was my idea, not told to by GP. ;) They're just happy to prescribe without getting to the cause of the problem, which is not good.

Anyway, within a week all symptoms have gone and I came off the tablets and have never looked back. I am so glad to be off them and the remedy really was quite easy.

LCDMan - so pleased to hear you're doing great. My Dad had cancer of the oesophogus and also my friend's hubby and he was only 49. You are one lucky man and long may your good health continue! SO pleased for you.:)

I was prescribed Lansoprazole last year by my GP after the stress from my divorce and subsequent fallout caused me to develop a stomach ulcer.

The GP told me to take the full month's supply and come back for a repeat prescription if the symptoms persisted. Fortunately they cleared up after the month and I'm now pretty much back to normal!

LCDMan - I actually think my Dad had his tumour a long time before he was diagnosed. He used to "burp" a lot and had heartburn very often. I also remember him clearing his throat a lot but at the time thought nothing of it.

It was only when he started having trouble swallowing that he decided to go to the doctor.

Now whenever I meet someone who is complaining about heartburn/indigestion I always tell them not to leave it too long. ;)

My friend's hubby (49) was as fit as a fiddle, big rugby-playing 6 foot something. Over one Xmas/New Year he just developed bad heartburn and put it down to eating extra rich food and drink over the festive period. That was his only symptom and he felt fine apart from that. At the end of Jan. he still had it and was taking Rennies/Gaviscon etc. so his wife said just get it checked out. No way were they expecting the diagnosis they got. Sadly it was advanced and there was nothing they could do and he died 3 months later.

Sorry if that's gloomy reading but I do think cancer of the oesophogus is one of the cancers that we don't hear too much about. But if they get it early on they can do a lot - and you're the proof LCDMan.:)

I was on lansoprazole for H.Pylori symptoms. It definitely stopped the bleeding in the stomach and eased things although it didn't help with the cramping.

No side effects for me either, which is good.
