I bought a Yamaha YAS-101 (£189 from Richer Sounds) for my 39" Philips. It will be wider than your telly, but the sound is superb. Looks good too. It only has digital inputs, so your TV should have either an optical or coaxial output socket (most modern sets have one or the other). My YouView box and Bluray player are connected to the TV by HDMI leads and a coaxial lead connects back to the sound bar. It all works together perfectly. Look elsewhere if you need to attach an iPod, though. It doesn't have an input for one.

I'm also looking at the LG NB2020 on Amazon!

If you connect it to optical on the back of your TV, is that the best way? Would this be as good as a 2.1 PC speaker set?

    What's a "reasonable" price ?

Asda superstores are selling the NB2020 for £75.
It should be an improvement on most TV speakers but don't expect a major upgrade.
The Yamaha David mentions will give much better sound.

    Yes, something around that price.

Richer Sounds are offering them under £70 for in store customers.

We don't watch movies or music anyway, so as long as the onboard speaker can be heard without a deaf aid, will should be alright :o

I've just bought this Soundbar, It packs quite a punch for one so small.

Yes it is pretty good for a cheap 2.1 setup, I got one for my parents.
The only problem was hiding the "breadbin" sized sub-woofer to keep my Mum happy without totally blocking the sound !
