football league highlights tv rights are worthless

news tv channels show the goals from 6pm on saturdays

The deal would have been worth something if channel 5 showed 10 live tv games from all 3 division that would have complimented sky's live coverage also

Yes I definitely feel the loss of the live Championship, but more importantly the loss of the League Cup final, from the FTA contract a few seasons ago was a poor decision. This would have been excellent for Channel 5 if that was brought back alongside highlights rights as it would establish them from the off with something to shout about.

More onus now on the BBC to retain the Premier League highlights in the New Year. If they lose those to ITV then their football coverage is limited to the FA Cup.

If Charles Sale is anything to go by;-), ITV will win the highlights package come the new year and BBC will, like you say, be left with very little football.

Sunday 14th December - BBC One

    Match of the Day 2

Mark Chapman presented alongside Dietmar Hamann and Alan Shearer

Manchester United v Liverpool - Guy Mowbray
Swansea City v Tottenham Hotspur - Alistair Mann

I don't think this is a good thing. I think the Football League Show has an excellent format on the BBC and I always enjoy watching it. With Channel 5 hosting the rights, there is a danger that it will become a lot more commercialised. I hope they have an experienced team and it doesn't become cheap and second rate. Though judging by the history of that channel, I have my doubts.

Perhaps surprisingly Provan is at Goodison Park. No commentary for Smith this weekend then!

I really hope Smith doesn't become studio based and Quinn swaps to co-comm!

As per usual, excellent stuff on MNF

And it's Alan Parry, in case anyone was wondering. Wondered if it might have been Bill Leslie, but I'm presuming he might be getting a cup game?

How do you think the CL comms will work out now?

I'm not sure if it's impacted by the draw or not, I'll go for

    City - Tyler
    Chelsea - Hawthorne
    Arsenal - Parry

    Unoriginal I know!

    Latest blunder from Parry:

"Everton have used all 3 substitutes so may have to ... oh no they haven't"

This pole shows that Shearer and Redknapp are better pundits than Carragher apparently

Last year it pretty much stayed the same for the last 16, aside from Parry replacing Mann on Man Utd. I'll ho for the above except I'll opt for Leslie doing Arsenal. I daresay Sky will be trying to get Thierry Henry in for the Arsenal v Monaco game!

On which note, I wonder if Andy Gray will do some FA Cup games for BT again this season?

I think the 7.45pm KO is the main reason. Brassell I think is in the O Cantinho de Portugal, in Brixton. Your wish is right! :) Rare occasion Dan Mason has a co-comm!

I was watching ESPN in the beginning of the coverage to check how they would start, and I was surprised with that opener too. Althought it seems provided by Sport TV, this never aired in Portugal.

I can get you the opener they use here if you want.

Thanks for the details about where Andy Brassell was watching O Classico from Callum, there are plenty of great Portuguese restaurants and cafes in the capital so it's good to know the Top Brass' pick of the local venues!

Glad to hear the two Dans (not those ones!) commentating on the game last night - Dan Mason knows his stuff when it comes to the Primeira Liga stemming back to his years covering it for Watch&Bet, so sounded very natural in his knowledge, while Danny Higginbotham is quickly becoming one of my favourite recently-retired ex-pro pundits. He's very honest and says exactly what he feels in a relatable manner. It was the second time I've listened to him co-commentate this week - he was also very good covering Roma v Manchester City on talkSPORT radio with Jim Proudfoot in midweek. So far from the best Porto v Benfica game I've ever seen, but an enjoyable commentary.

Very kind of you to offer to upload the SportTV opener Alex, if you don't mind doing it and it isn't too much trouble I'd welcome it. I really like the SportTV Primeira theme tune, that is if they are still using the same one they used throughout the Liga ZON Sagres sponsorship run!

Anyone have the commentary and presentation details of BT Sport 1/2's coverage of Monday night's two Serie A games? I was out all evening. Thanks in advance.

Thierry Henry has announced his retirement from football and will join Sky Sports as a football expert and ambassador from the start of 2015.

Never warmed to Henry as a pundit, admittedly not seen great deal of him but for some reason always comes across as bit arrogant and up his own arse to me. Hopefully I am proved wrong. Be interested to see what role he plays. Is he just an ambassador like Beckham or will he be a pundit? One thing they must not do is tinker with MNF format!!!
