I have bought a car with an after market stereo fitted (not the original). The sound for CDs is perfect however for listening to the radio you can hardly hear anything and it is all crackly which is very annoying ! Im not an expert in this area so does anyone have any ideas how to fix it :)?

Maybe a loose connection with the aerial at the back? Can you take the radio out and get a look at the back of it and the connections?

Just looks like a standard one on the roof I tried taking it of and screwing it back on to see if it was loose or anything but it is making no difference, the sound from the radio is the exact same whether the arieal is on or off:confused:

Taking the radio out is fairly straightforward. In most it just requires push a small object into a small hole or several small holes around the stereo to 'unclick' it from it's holder and you can then easily slide it out, and get a look at it. It then slides back in and clicks into place again. The wires and plugs at the back are sturdy enough so little chance of them coming out when you move the stereo, and they are all different shapes and sizes too so you can't really plug something into the wrong slot.

IIRC, the aerial will have the round connection, but even if you can't identify which cable is which, just make sure all of them are in nice and tight. At least it will elimanate a cable problem. Maybe the radio itself is faulty and the unit needs replaced?

I tried taking it out just there it wasn't for moving I couldn;t find any of the holes around the stereo either, I will have a look and see if I can find any removal keys though.

Is it the same across all stations and bands? Or is it ok on strong signals?

For one of the stations it is better than the others

It might just be a bad connection on the plug at the radio end of the aerial....it only takes one strand of wire from the sheath (are they still sheathed?) to touch the core.

If you have an ICE specialist near you, Im sure theyd have the radio out and the aerial checked in a few minutes.

Not the same think, but I remember when my sister-in-law had bad TV reception. She got an aerial fitter in to check it, he went on the roof, came back and told her that the problem was....she didn't actually have a TV aerial! The woman next door had satellite TV installed, and decided to take her TV aerial down. Unfortunately, she removed the wrong one.

Well we got a new aerial, but it was just as bad. In the end they said something about the aerial touching the cars body work or something  So they replaced the end which bolts on to the aerial and it's fine now
