Theresa May. Oh dear oh dear.

She's just a hard-line klaxon gob.... which is tolerable if one has the intelligence to back it up.
    Unfortunately she is an imbecile.

    I agree.

Just because she isn't a media sensation doesn't mean she is not excellent at her job.

She tends to keep her head down and just gets on with it.
If she really is gay friendly, I'd like to see that :D

    "promoting rights for homosexuals"

That tell everyone all they need to know about you.

Much the same with your posts.
    jswift909 wrote: »
Everyone should be equal yes. Since Gay people aren't treated equally, there's a need to not "promote" but to ensure equality. It sounds like you are in favour of another Section 28.

It's far too late for that, the flood gates to equality have now been opened and it would be ridiculous to even think of reversing it.
    jswift909 wrote: »
It sounds like you think that trying to achieve equality is some act of "promoting" Gay rights. It's not a good choice of words to post.

As I've intimated before, legislation is there to ensure equality in "Human" rights not just Gay, Black or Women's rights.

    Agreed.
She is the Tory version of Harriet Harman.

Can I just make one thing clear: We are not after Gay Rights, we are after Gay EQUALITY! the same as everyone else.

We don't want special treatment we just want the same as straight people, yet currently we are still second class people in this country in 2010!

Is there much gay inequality left in legislation these days?

Just a few things. Before you say anything, these were taken from Labour'/LibDem/Green manifestos from this election - I haven't suddenly devised them myself. :)

(Oh. I think there might have been one promised by the Conservatives also).

Root out homophobia and discrimination from public services and public life.

Reform our schools to tackle homophobia & transphobia

Outlaw incitement to homophobic hatred in all forms
(reverse the so-called Waddington amendment which saw Tory Lords water down our legislation to protect people from incitement to homophobic hate.) Amend the Equalities Bill/Act to provide explicit protection against harassment of LGBTI people.)

Compulsory, inclusive sex and relationship education (removing the opt-out)

Ensure anyone who was convicted of a homosexual offence which was subsequently decriminalised will have the opportunity to have their names removed from the sex offenders register and /or the police national computer on application.

Continue the campaign in the UN for the Universal Decriminalisation of Homosexuality
    focusing on the 9 countries where it is still punishable by death;
Homosexuality is punishable by death in Iran, and human rights groups estimate some 4,000 gays have been executed since the Islamic revolution in 1979."

Use Britain’s unique strength in the world and of our international alliances to fight for our values, to challenge homophobia, promote equality and ensure other governments deliver LGBT equality.

Push for the rewriting of the Mental Health Act to remove trans people from the Psychiatric Disorder Register.

Gibraltar to equalise the gay age of consent

Ensure that all British embassies around the world are licensed to carry out civil partnership ceremonies.

    Replace Civil Partnerships with Marriage.
Note that Marriage is a secular legal notion. Weddings are religious ceremonies. There's no need to have Civil Partnerships if they're supposed to be exactly the same as Marriage. Is there?

Make sure that asylum applications from Gay people fleeing persecution are treated fairly
Recognising that many Gay people face torture and can face death in some counties. Ending deportations of LGBT refugees to countries where they face persecution

Campaign against any reduction in the AIDS/HIV budget and target health promotion work to prevent sexually transmitted infections.

Push for the rewriting of the Mental Health Act to remove trans people from the Psychiatric Disorder Register.

End the blanket, lifetime ban on gay and bisexual blood donors

Oppose all opt-outs from equality and anti-discrimination laws by religious organisations
...and remove special treatment allowing faith schools to promote homophobia on the grounds of religion.

    Comprehensive training for teachers and educational staff on all diversity and inclusion issues;
.. schools to promote equal opportunities in their anti-bullying procedures; equalities issues to be monitored in teaching recruitment.

Require all police forces to have LGBT Liaison Officers
.. with paid time allocated within their work schedules to tackle homophobic and transphobic hate crime.

Refuse visas and work permits to "murder music" singers and others who incite homophobic and transphobic violence.

    Increasing LGBT representation in Parliament

    Civil partnerships without borders
Campaign to ensure that same-sex partnerships to be recognised throughout Europe and internationally.

How can you qualify that statement. Is this just your opinion or do you have some formal basis, perhaps some quantitative measure based on voting record.

How do you explain someone with such a truely apaulling record on voting for equality legislation?

Have you met her? Do you know her personally? Have you met someone who's met her?

Not taking sides here but aren't MP's supposed to represent the views of their constituents? Perhaps she (and others) votes in line with the wishes of them?

I thought it was quite a useful question. I'm not totally au-fait with current legislation that affects gay people negatively. This is why I asked.

Why does it miss the point?

Can't see why anyone would have a problem with any of the above.

My one reservation is meddling with affairs in foreign lands.

My only objection to immigration is when these people try to influence the way we live our lives, (If they don't like the UK as it is, why come here)?

    IMO we should reciprocate.

Has your MP asked for your opinion on a range of issues?

However, I'm sure we could make very sure that 4.5 million Gay constituents make themselves heard.

The Internet already has hundreds of blogs and commentaries on May and her views and voting record, and there's plenty already on twitter. It's not an impressive first 1/2 day in office is it. Every single thing this person does is going to be scrutinised in intricate detail. Every bill is going to be looked at for any signs it discriminates.

I was really hoping they'd have common sense and put a moderate or LibDem in there, I really was.

So much for all the claims by Tory boys and girls on this forum that they had changed. I think that's been blown out of the water now.

This is a prime example of what Labour has done.

Select a minority, encourage the idea that it is only being a member of that minority that is important, then trumpet how much they have done for them.
They've done it with muslims, they've done it with ethnic minorities, they've used minorities over and over again to proclaim that they care more than anybody else.

But there's so much that is important to all minorities that are as important to everybody.

Have a load of money to build your minority community centre, but put up with failing schools.

Have equal rights legislation but we will spy on your every move and if it suits us use that information against you.

Here look, nobody can discriminate, but there are no jobs in other than anything than the public sector because we've destroyed the private.

Have the right to prosecute somebody for a hate crime, but don't expect to be protected by the law from common burgelry or having your life made miserable by gangs of out of control youths.

Wake up people, you have been used by Labour.

Why does it have to boil down to a choice?

Why can't we do both - respond to the needs of minorities and respond to needs of others? Why can't minorities have their community centre and also address the issue of failing schools? It shouldn't have to be either/or.

I'm all for government being inclusive and all that, but well, I'm just not sure if it's appropriate to appoint a porn star as Home Secretary.

Wait, you mean there's another Teresa May?

    It shouldn't.

But firstly there's a matter of funding.

And secondly, one is easier to proclaim as having been done and that can be used to defer critisism of the harder things that need to be done.

Take the schools for instance. If you get a good education, get good qualifications, chances are that you are less likely to need a goverment hand out to build a community centre.
A community will become less dependant on the goverment altogether.

But to get to that situation, you have to sort out the schools. And that is very hard to do, takes a long time and during that time, no headlines showing you as the party who cares.

Have to love this forum, the Labour left whinge that there are no females in the cabinet and then immediately slate the female who is given a cabinet post.

It's barely worth reading many of these threads anymore. If it's related to the new coalition, the usual names will immediately say they 'hate it' and it's 'all over before it starts' without even reading the threads.

You cannot expect people who see a homophobe being replaced by a woman with an even worse record on equal rights being placed in a position of promoting equality to simply ignore it because she is a woman!
