I think he has great ranger as an actor. He can do dark and scary just as well as light and funny.
Think two of best episodes showing his skills were TEH and AGMGTW. You do allmost believe he is a 1000+ two hearted allien who has experianced terrible wars and loss in his life.
Still finds fun and joy in the universe and the people he meets while traveling through it.
I think he was much better in his earlier episodes as the Doctor. Especially TEH and the Angels 2-parter. Everything he did was instinctive where later it's seemed more of him playing up to that original 'act'. Don't know if that makes any sense...and I'm not saying Matt isn't good anymore. It just seemed to mean more in his early days.
