I'm not surprised they're trying to appeal to Gen 1 players, it has been between 17 and 20 years, depending on where you are in the world, since the original games were released. Gen 1 players are now adults with jobs and money, many younger players still rely on their parents.
To be honest I think depending on how they pull this off it could be an interesting concept, seems to be based on how Darwin found that birds on certain islands evolved differently, so I think that's what they're going for, which begs the question why they didn't do it sooner.
The thing is, it's all great and what not doing this, but if they suddenly give the 600+ existing Pokémon different forms, that's a lot of unnecessary additions.
I doubt the original 151 will be touched, you'll no doubt be able to catch/use a normal Arcanine or Vulpix. It's just now you've got a different option should you so wish it. Still stupid though!
Personally, what worries me more is they've now ditched gyms entirely and possibly even the Elite Four (though that part is pure speculation on my side), which is far more concerning, as that's a core gameplay element that this entire franchise has been built upon, just thrown out the window.

It's being strongly rumoured (no official source yet unfortunately) that you won't be able to obtain the original forms of the respective "Alola Form" Pokémon unless you transfer their original forms from X, Y, Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire.
However not all of the original 151 are getting alternate forms, they're picking a select number from each generation, including the recent X and Y Pokémon to get Alola Forms, so expect something from every Generation to get alternate designs and typing.
Yeah, it's a weird one. On the one hand I guess it's good that they're actually doing something different to break up the standard formula this time round, but I dunno... I'm not sold on the whole "totem Pokémon" idea replacing 4 of the gym leaders, just seems off...

Sorry, yeah, I meant via trades and transfers. My point was that the classics wont be entirely lost on us.

It would be quite something if they reworked all 151 (though they've kind of already done that with a bunch of the mega evos). Still, this wont be the last game in the franchise, and you can bet it's only a matter of time before Blastoise becomes Water/Steel, and Charizard becomes Fire/Dragon in a new regional form.

One thing I will say about the regional evolutions is it means Pokémon who have terrible designs or were terribly underpowered might now actually become good or even great and that excites me.
Also, Water/Steel Blastoise?? Hells yes, sign me up for that right away!
I've always felt sorry for the starters who never got a duel typing when the others in their generations do like Blastoise in Generation 1, none in Generation 2 all single typing, Sceptile (before the Mega Evolution) in Generation 3, none in Generation 4 all starters got a duel typing, Generation 5 Serperior and Samurott and again none in Generation 6 all duel typing.
Hopefully Popplio and Litten get a second typing this Generation as well.

That's one of the better things they could do.
I wish (in hindsight) that they'd just reboot everything, rather than create a bunch of (re)envisioned Pokémon that they don't need to do. Do away with these lame new designs, and do away with the mega evos too. Put Charizard as a Fire/Dragon, Blastoise as Water/Steel, Gyarados can remain Water/Flying, but then use his mega as a third evolution and change it to Flying/Dragon.
Get rid of Magby, Elekid, and all those other babies. Same goes for the top forms. Electabuzz, Magmar (etc) were perfectly fine as they were. Their Jr's & Sr's merely spoilt them! Ninetails can still be Fire/Fairy, Arcanine can be Fire/Fight, or Fire/Ground. Luxray could become Electric/Dark.
Then they can limit the Legendary Pokémon to 5 per region; some of the later games have a stupid amount.
I) Mew, Mewtwo, Zappy, Articuno & Moltres
II) Ho-Oh, Lugia, Raikou, Entei and Suicune
III) Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Latios and Latias
IV) Celebi, Victini, Cresselia, Darkrai and Giratina
V) Tornadus, Thundurus, Landorus, Reshiram and Zekrom
I don't know enough about Gen VI to cast an opinion.

It's being reported mega evolutions might be done away with already and may just become full fledged evolution types, which honestly? Fine. Some of the mega designs were a bit substandard but I would like them a lot more if they were permanent and not limited to once per battle, which was an appaling mechanic imo.
I don't think they should reboot the franchise though, that would just cause an unprecedented shit storm imo, so many people absolutely love the later games, I've seen a huge number of fans for Black and White in particular, which was imo easily the single worst gen by quite a long way. So many of those fans are contrarians who want to rebel against "gen wunners" but there are people who genuinely love the new stuff, so if that was taken away.... yeah there'd be hell to pay.
About your legendary point though, if they were to ever do a NX game that brought all regions together, I think they should definitely limit the number of legendaries that appear, because otherwise you have I think it's around 30 (?) legendaries in one game, and that just reduces their "Wow factor" considerably.
So what I would suggest in that scenario is have 3 legendaries per region (the birds for Kanto. The dogs for Johto. The Regis for Hoenn. The fairies for Sinnoh. Coballion, Virizion and Terrakion for Unova. Xerneas, Yveltal and Zygarde for Kalos) and then have Mewtwo, Mew, Rayquaza and Arceus as the overarching "super" legendaries.

I didn't mean reboot and only release the 151. I meant reboot, but reshuffle. They could better organize their alt evolutions and alt forms a bit better then.

I think Gen IV had like 14? Far too many. Considering how shite some of them were too...

Ah right I see, honestly it would be a bit of fresh air if they did do... let's say the first 2 generations or 3 generations of Pokémon, but just entirely alt form.
That way you get the first 3 gens for all the people who love the old games, but you get to experience them in new ways which would appeal to those who wanna experience something new.
As for the late game legendaries? Rayquaza was the last genuinely good one imo, from Deoxys onwards it just got a bit silly and too much. Especially in Gen 4 and Gen 5, where the term "legendary" lost all meaning. They reeled it back in Gen 6 by only introducing 3 new legendaries in that generation, but still...
On Serebii.net new leaks off Pokemon have been released:
The first images from CoroCoro have leaked and have revealed the latest news on Sun & Moon. As always, do note that translations are preliminary while we work on them. The little sandcastle is called Sunabaa while the big one is called Shirodesuna. Both are Ghost/Ground-type. Pre-evolved Bewear is called Nuikoguma and remains Normal/Fighting-type. and the fish is Yowashi is Water-type and appears to have the ability to change its appearance into a larger fish. It also confirms Alolan Meowth & Marowak. Alolan Meowth is Dark-type while Alolan Marowak is Fire/Ghost-type.
We also see the first bits of the antagonist team, Team Skull. Its boss is called Guzma and the girl is Plumeri
It also confirms that next month's issue will contain a poster featuring Rockruff's "Secret Evolution".
Alolan Meowth developed after being bred by the royal family of Alola. Alolan Marowak developed in response to its natural predators in order to resist them We'll bring more as it comes
Appears we've got a new form of Cubone/Marowak too; possibly Ice/Dark if I had to guess. Same for Meowth, unless it's just a female version (and they turn the existing one into male only).

Alolan Marowak is a Fire/Ghost type (not sure about Alolan Cubone though) and Alolan Meowth is a Dark type.
I'm not too fond of the design itself, but I really like the fact that it surfs on its own tail.
Also, pleased for Raichu fans in general. GameFreak's been neglecting Raichu in place of Pikachu since Gold and Silver, to such an extent that I was fully expecting Pikachu to get a Mega Evolution and not Raichu.
Type: Null is a Normal type.
Jangmo-o is a Dragon type
Alola Form Raticate is a Dark/Normal type like Rattata.
An Ultra Beast called UB-01.
Pokemon Sun and Moon are set 12 hours apart and certain events will play out differently.
Some new characters introduced:
The Aether Foundation are Lusamine (Aether's Glamorous President), Faba (Aether's Branch Chief), Wicke (Assistant Branch Chief) and also Aether's Foundation Employees.

The name of the Pokémon Rockruff evolves into is Lugarugan and has a different appearance based on if it evolves in Day or in Night. It notes that Rockruff becomes the Midday Form when bathed in the rays of the sun and when full of the night's power, it becomes the Midnight Form. No types or further details have been given
There are also two Ultra Beasts called UB02, UB02 Beauty and UB02 Expansion.
10:41: In the scan, it shows UB02 Expansion appearing in Pokémon Sun, facing off against Tapu Koko and UB02 Beauty facing off against Tapu Koko in Pokémon Moon.
10:45: It also states that UB01's name is a mystery but may have a deep meaning
10:58: It also reveals that it will show the true strength of the new Pokémon, Type: Null, during its next issue We'll bring more as it comes
