Judi winning for Shakespeare in love was a travesty. I can't help but feel they gave it to her as they felt bad for robbing her blind the year before. Well that and because the movie had the biggest Oscar campaign ever done by a movie at that time and campaigns are certain to get you nominated and win, regardless of whether you are good or not. Not like the old days when you won it based on merit of a performance. To win an Oscar for a comedic fluff pantomime eight minute role was a smack in the face to her talent personally. Lynn Redgrave should of won.
I would of happily nominated and given an Oscar for Jim Carrey for The Truman show. Laura Linney was deserving of a best supporting actress nom as well. Ed Harris was average at best and yet somehow managed to be nominated. Baffling
What gets to me is that Ed Harris got nominated for appearing in the third act of the film, and yet Jim Carrey didn't even get nominated. He won the Golden Globe, so you'd think that he would've gotten a nomination.
Sorry, I meant 1998.
That's true. There were so many mistakes that year.
Roberto Benigni beating Edward Norton for Best Actor
Gwyneth Paltrow beating Cate Blanchett for Best Actress
Jim Carrey not being nominated for The Truman Show
and above all...
Shakespeare in Love beating Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture
