Hello everyone. I am 57 years old and a single man. I don’t work because I don’t need to and I spend most of my time doing nothing very interesting, although I am in the midst of refurbishing a bungalow which I intend to move into shortly. I don’t drive and walk everywhere, and my carbon footprint is only a size 10. I used to work for a very big chemical and manufacturing company where I started at the bottom and worked my way up to nearly the very top, and then got fed up with it all and resigned. I threw my suits in the bin and have never worn one since. Then I bought my first PC (in 1991) and started my own IT based business. This didn’t last long because my Dad died suddenly, after being mis-diagnosed by a very tired NHS hospital doctor, and I had to move to look after my Mum. I then spent over 10 years in and out of work, where I finally gained some IT qualifications, as my employment was nearly always IT software support.
I meet lots of new people, as my friendly and open attitude is conducive to complete strangers coming up to me and chatting to me. I know all my neighbours and am lucky that my life is enriched by having known so many people. The ladies are always smiling at me and kids seem to find me fascinating and want to tell me all about their lives and problems. As a result of all this I have met people from many different nationalities from all walks of life and all ages, ranging from the very richest to the very poorest, and all with a story to tell.
I have noticed that newcomers to this forum don’t tend to write very much here, so it’s hard to get an impression of who they are and what they are about. I guess people find it hard to say anything about themselves or they are modest about their achievements in life.
I used to have lots of friends, spent all my money as soon as I was paid, went out a lot and never thought about the future, but in 1996, as a result of me never saving any money, I became very poor and had to sell nearly everything. I lost virtually all my friends, who weren’t so interested in me after all, and although I have now turned round my life, I only have a few friends and hardly go out at night at all. Being poor taught me a hard lesson, one that I wish I had had earlier in life, because I was too arrogant, stupid and sure of myself.
After my Mum died last year, I became a bit depressed and still find it hard some days. The remainder of my family are only cousins twice removed and they might as well be on the moon, for all I see of them. They think I’m a bit odd anyway, which is fair enough. I keep on meaning to try to trace my Mum’s family in Italy, but she hadn’t seen them since the end of 1945 and I’m too lazy.
I read a lot, mostly fiction these days, although I used to read science fiction and fantasy. I bought so many books that my last flat filled up with them, so I gave them all to Shelter. I don’t buy or read newspapers. You don’t find out anything about what’s going on in newspapers. My favourite authors over the last 5 years have been JRR Tolkien, Bernard Cornwell, Tom Sharpe and Dale Brown, but I first read Lord of the Rings many years ago and read it and The Hobbit every year. I have always been interested in science and new technology and have recently bought a wonderful high spec laptop and am enjoying broadband surfing, and watching Blu-ray movies on it in ‘surround’ stereo via my Hi-Fi.
I listen to loads of music, sometimes accompanied by an illegal substance containing THC, smoked in a pipe or rolled in a ciggy, although these days I only have some 300 CDs. I used to have close to a thousand LPs but sold nearly all of them when I was skint. I love my British made sound system and in particular my pre-production Quad 44/405 amp combination and my matched pair of B&W DM7 Mk2 speakers which have dominated my various lounges since 1972.
My TV is now 23 years old and only a 15” CRT. However this will change when I move as I intend to buy a 55” LED. I don’t watch any soaps or any so-called reality shows, but I enjoy University Challenge, Have I got news for you, QI, Top Gear, The Gadget Show (well, Suzie Perry really), Buzzcocks and anything presented by Sir David Attenborough. I’m not very keen on American series except for Star Trek, but have even lost interest in that as it’s been repeated ad infinitum. In fact I’m totally fed up with all the repeats and am particularly disappointed with the BBC’s new policy of repeating programmes 3 times every week. Especially ‘Coast’. Every time I see it in the schedules I sigh with frustration. Also, why does the BBC see the need to put that incredibly annoying ‘Red button’ on all the news and sports programmes. Leave it out for God’s sake!
I suppose I should mention that I have Klinefelter’s Syndrome as there aren’t many of us out there. I’m lucky because I was only diagnosed with it in 1995, I only have a very mild form of it and I only need an injection every 3 weeks. My daily fix of red wine has now also been severely curtailed due to my recent diagnosis of Hiatus Hernia, as has my need for CHOCOLATE!
Well then, you have a brief introduction to me and my life. I hope this will encourage other new members to write a bit more about themselves other than, ‘Hello, I’m a new member and that’s it!’ But if not, I don’t blame you. Perhaps I’ve written too much.

I just found your forum, and whereas I'm kinda burned out by forums, I read some comments that I wanted to respond to, so I signed up.

I'm from the US, and I'm a huge DWTS fan, and a fan of Derek Hough. I work on a fan website for him, and no, I'm not a teen bopper. Actually, I meet the standard demographics for the USA DWTS audience, old and older. :)

I'm met many UK friends on twitter, so I like to bridge between countries. Hi to everyone who happens to read this.

hi evil (please tell me the c stands for something moderate)

I was very interested to read your intro, as one, it took some time to write, and the effort is appreciated. As a creative writer, it was almost like one of the character profiles I would create (so that they can then tell me about the plot, as it were).

Also made me think of personality profiles, beyond the factors of education and socialisation, what makes one person write much and in a detailed way, and others so fleeting and generic.

have you ever taken a myers-briggs test? I think its very insightful.

welcome to the wordy and the succinct, from a newbie too

    Hello.

This isn't my 1st post but i joined just to discuss X-Factor things, and well since it's over i thought i would poke around the rest of the forums so here i am.

I'm here mainly to kill time so i'll probably be posting random things in random threads.

English is not my first language so sorry in advance if i don't make sense sometimes (won't tell you which country i'm from since everybody hates us)

    Have a nice day.

Another newbie here, not new to forums as been on them the last 7 years or so but new here so be gentle! :)

I enjoy radio listening - not really one for listening to CDs, MP3s etc, prefer the unpredictability of radio and have a very wide range of music tastes.

I also enjoy photography and spend far too long on the internet!

I look forward to reading and posting and getting to know people here :D
