Ipod memory query

I just bought the 20gb Ipod...and I found that about 5 gig of a possible 18.6 gig was already used up.

Should it be that way?

If anyone could help I'd appreciate it.

    Some is taken up with the system software, but not 5 gigs.

    Maybe I should re-format it? Any idea how I do that?

    When I was installing the software on the PC and linking the I Pod with it the first time it attempted to format the I Pod but that failed.
