The combination of Joe Speight with Stewart Robson is strong, with this being ITV's 3/4th choice (bearing in mind Jon Champion is used from time to time) it beggers belief how Matterface and Carlisle are above them, also if ITV are able to get a co commentator like Robson then why on earth do they persist with Andy Townsend. If ITV looked at the public opinion they would see there are very few that like his commentries, therefore why go on with him unless it costs too much to get rid of him.

Andy Townsend scores pretty high in audience appreciation... don't make judgements based solely on Twitter, because it isn't at all representative of what people really think.

He's more popular than Alan Smith or Mark Lawrenson, for example, and another broadcaster did try and poach him a few years ago when they needed a new co-commentator.

Wasn't he linked with hosting BBC Breakfast at one point too! Of those three I do prefer Townsend but wish he'd stop his football fan tourettes ("go on! ahhh no! good pass").

Darren Fletcher is ok as a TV commentator but nothing against him there are still better out there who could of teamed up with Darke.

He is still in radio mode for me at times but I suppose if BT end up with more high profile games in the future then he can only get better as BT seem more than keen to use him on decent games they have now.

I am not a big Fletcher fan, too big headed for me but he does have a good rapport with Owen. Could become almost a Tyler/Gray situation, individually as a commentator extremely irritating but with the right man alongside a much better proposition.

I rate Owen, his performance Man Utd v Everton was superb.

Well, Eurosport 2* in April dropped the J. League and AFC Champions League, but in the last few hours they've bought rights to the Indian Super League that starts this weekend.

    * not UK - yet.

    Presumably Sky?

How does audience appreciation work? I'm not sure that could be said to be representative either!

Audience appreciation of Andy Townsend? :o

Mind you, ITV also believe that people appreciate Piers Morgan and Simon Cowell so quite frankly, what do we know?

Nobody watching Cheltenham Town v Bristol City?

It's Natalie Sawyer presenting with Peter Beagrie. Commentary from Gary Weaver and David Prutton.

The question I'd have is who on earth the audience are that ITV are asking then?

They're clearly not asking the right people - I'm never met anyone who's a fan of Townsend's commentary. And I'd actually say on things like football coverage the internet is slightly more accurate as a barometer of public view than it is for most other subjects.

I think I remember the BBC saying the 2012 Royal Pageant coverage had high audience appreciation too (despite being condemned by everyone) so it does seem a bit of an iffy measure of what people like if you ask me.

I was very tempted to bite but didn't.

I think ianmatt is now quite clearly on the wind-up (if that wasn't certain before).

Otherwise you wouldn't criticise some of the very good commentators and pundits he has (Tyler, Murphy and Wilson in particular) as much as he has and then at the same time say the running joke on commentary that is Owen is a good co-commentator.

You have to remember folks that the same poster who is posting these claims about Townsend is also the same poster who said that Speight was onsite at matches at the World Cup.

At the end of the day if people joined in with my boycott of ITV's football coverage then they would have to do something about it. The likes of Chiles, Tyldesley, Townsend, Matterface and Carlisle are all local radio standard at best.

People won't join you though - because you know they want to watch the football itself and that's what most important to them. Actual coverage is a far second and won't be enough to stop people watching a game if they want to.

Plus your boycott of ITV meant you missed out on the commentary dream team of 'Blight' - so you were the one who lost out I think. :D

I must admit quite a few people I know do not rate Townsend at all and I would be very surprised if he got in any top ten of co-commentators, his "go on" or "hit it" every time theres a chance is more than annoying to say the least.

Just looking through Sky's Premier League fixtures for December and wondering what Jamie Redknapp and particularly Dave Jones might get after Saturday 13th - if last year's pattern continues then Ed would get Boxing Day and New Year's Day and with no SNF the Saturday before Christmas, none the Saturday after (no games that day as in between Boxing Day and the 28th) and then the FA Cup Jones might go almost a month without hosting anything!

People join in? What like everyone on this forum? You know we are like 0.01% of the ITV audience in this forum of geekdom (geekdom - in a nice way!) :D

Like to see who the Townsend survey is. I know twitter isn't the be all and end all of thoughts though. For example, Davie Provan gets a bit of stick on twitter but is (quite rightly) praised/liked here.

I think you have to be very careful with any survey like this.

If you ask the public which newsreader / actor / singer / author / sportsman / politician (indeed any category of person) they like the most then people invariably just answer with a name they are most familiar with.

So the best known person scores the highest.

So ask the public which co-comm they most like and Townsend will score a million miles higher than say Provan - because he is far, far, far better known than Provan.

Your average punter doesn't really concentrate on who's speaking. If this thread is 0.01% opinons, Twitter is probably 5%.

You get someone like my Dad who watches a big chunk of football but doesn't pay close attention to who's who in the comm box etc and thinks John Motson is still the best commentator and so on.

    Indeed.

If a survey was done today amongst the general public (ie like an opinion poll) and people were asked who their favourite football commentator was unprompted (ie the interviewer did not offer a list of suggested names) then I think it is almost certain that Motson would come top - because he is still by far the name most familiar to the general public.
