Depression isn't an obscure illness though. I'd be surprised if you don't know someone personally who is afflicted with it, to some degree.
The people I know don't bore each other by talking about their illnesses. Difficult to imagine, given the ethos of this board but that's real life for you.;-)

Lets hope life is kind to you & all you know. One day you maybe walking in those shoes.
On a side note, I never found Robin Williams funny, but I'm sad he took his life. RIP - RW
I think the clue here in the content of your post-is the content of your post.
That's not what I said though, that depressed people bore others by talking about their illnesses. It might be the ones who aren't talking for fear of boring you, who are depressed.
Or they have noticed how ignorant he is on the subject and are scared to talk to him about it
This sounds likely.
Oh, nice attempt at passive aggressiveness. Far more likely that they're just normal people getting on with their lives and have bigger things to worry about. I know it's difficult for you to imagine but the majority of people don't spend most of their time agonising about fanciful mental 'issues'.
Anyway, this is all OT. RIP Robin Williams.
First you say it's obscure, now you claim people are making it up.
Your lack of knowledge is astonishing.
If you have got something to say to me, say it don't imply it
Fanciful issues???? You are unreal.
I have depression. Funnily enough I don't particularly talk about it much with friends or colleagues a) because it's no-one elses problem but mine and b) because there are too many ill-educated morons out there who believe it's 'fanciful' and don't understand its an illness.
You're a prick. If I get banned for saying so, so be it.
Why are you such an ignorant imbecile?
I ask a genuine question.
Oh I doubt you will.
You seem to be on the correct side of the right-on divide that rules DS on these matters. I daresay if I were to call you an inarticulate, mindless prick for failing to construct an argument and resorting to clumsy insults, I would get banned.
So I won't. ;-)
I shouldn't be surprised at this kind of wallowing in ignorance on here any more on here but the use of "right-on" speaks volumes about you.
PS I know it shouldn't be taken seriously as it's likely just sniggering mischief but it's easy to take at face value and warrants a reply in case others even less bright are influenced by it.
Was that meant to be clever? I don't need to be articulate. The whole forum can see you don't know what you're talking about already.
I've been blasted quite a bit for what I have said, I apologise. I asked as I wanted to know of the reason.
I know like two people with the problem and for them there are reasons for their situation or so I believe.
I looked into more of Robin Williams and seems he had drug and drink problems and work pressure, and its knock on effects from that.
You think it's knock on effects from that. He'd been clean for 20 years.
You really don't have a clue about mental illness.
I have had problems since I was a teenager and appear to most as a successful person. I'm nearly 50. I'm lucky enough to have a 'kill yourself tomorrow, rather than today' thing in my head, which has kept me alive.
If you're a true friend they wouldn't be boring you. You'd WANT to help. That's what real friends do. Let's hope you never need a good friend if that's your attitude.
You really are clueless aren't you? Oh dear. Thank heavens most people have more compassion.
Well said.
Robin was yet another person savaged to death by the Black Dog.
RIP.
He seems proud to be clueless! He said earlier "I don't see why one would bother researching obscure illnesses" to justify it. Even if he has no compassion, as some people just don't, he can at least deal in facts.
He can start here :-
