We don't actually get the late August Bank Holiday up here in Scotland, but I actually take it as a day's Annual Leave!

Why not? There's no legal right to bank holidays - lots of places work on bank holidays. You have a legal entitlement to a certain number of days off per year, depending on how many hours you work, but not to taking that time off on specific days.

I didn't know that. The only person I noticed off work today was someone who's off ill, people generally prefer to save their holidays up and take a whole week off.

I suspect it's a local convention at wherever gomezz works. It's not a legal entitlement.

Ah! Yes indeed. If it is company policy then your local line manager is not able to bar you booking off Bank Holidays.

Remember that more bank holidays wouldn't mean more days off work. The number of days you are entitled to is set down by law and isn't affected by the number of bank holidays.

If you work for a company that closes on bank holidays then your employer can count these days as part of your holiday entitlement, so the more bank holidays you have, the less days you have to take when you want to.

There's a bank holiday in Japan about every 2 weeks or something.

Just watch the financial news and see how many times they say "the Hang Seng is closed for a public holiday".

What is a scandal is that the banks consider it a non-working day for things like cheque clearing.

Somebody, somewhere, has to actually go out of their way to ensure that happens and it's a disgrace.

I always thought the Hang Seng was for Hong Kong!

Where my hubby works if you work bank holiday you get another day off instead-when ever you like durring the year.
As for me---I get all school holidays off ;)

Do we really need enforced days off in this day and age?

Especially when it's like a second Sunday so nowhere is open?

I'd rather have the extra days as annual leave to be taken when I want.

I work Bank Holidays and entertain all those that have Bank Holiday's off.

No, it's wonderful to have a random day here and there.

I've had a fantastic day, and no shops were involved.

Totally agree as how many of us are able to take our full holidays?

Entertain? In what sense are you using the word entertain?
