correct, it was an anti-war (nuclear arms race, polaris, trident, cruise missiles were controversial at the time). the crimbo bit was almost an afterthought, a lament by the soldier that he'd 'rather be at home for christmas'...
'fairytale of new york' isnt a crimbo song, its a song that mentions crimbo instead of being about crimbo, just like 'stop the cavalry' and 'stay another day'.
'Stay another day' doesn't mention Xmas at all, and 'stop the cavalry' only mentions it once. At least 'fairtale of new york' has the line 'and the bells were ringing out, for Christmas day'.
I'd say that pretty much makes it a Christmas song. 'It was Christmas Eve....in the drunk tank;.
Pipes Of Peace by Paul McCartney. It has a wintery feel to it and I think the song was released around Christmas but I don't think it is actually a Christmas song.

I agree, it's not really a Christmas song, but the video is set in the truce on Christmas Day in World War 1.
Just noticed btw that in the animated part of the video, the children are sitting in front of a Christmas tree opening presents, and their mother serves up Christmas pudding, so it's really a Christmas song in all but name.

Of the songs any of you have mentioned, this is the one I agree with the most.
I haven't really been as excited about music or the run-up to Christmas in the 90s or 00s but I can add Bjork's It's Oh So Quiet. I suppose it is often oh so quiet out on Christmas Day!
By the way, in case I forget in other threads, I wish all of you who have responded to my posts or even just read them a very merry Christmas. After today I will see you next on Boxing Day!
Surely that makes it a christmas song!.......'peace and good will to all men etc'?.
Pipes Of Peace is generally considered a Christmas song because of it's background story and it often features on Christmas albums, as does The Power Of Love by Frankie Goes To Hollywood, because of the accompanying music video.
"Heartbeat" by Steps. It always features on music channels at this time of year. Lyrically, it's nothing do with Christmas. The video has a snowy setting though. I'm not sure whether any specific Christmas references feature.

My Oh My - Slade
Ten years after the Xmas song they got the Xmas Number Two in 1983 with this.
Was just listening to it and it sounds like a wintery song to me. Nice song though!
... dunno why I find it wintery...

No mention of Christmas in the lyrics, but the song and video have a very festive and wintry feel.

It was a Christmas hit in 1989 though and had a nice Christmassy cover: http://cdn.7static.com/static/img/sleeveart/00/001/229/0000122966_350.jpg

I always thought that song sounded more McCartneyesque than some of McCartney's own stuff.
It was also out in December 1988, so it has become a kind of Christmas song perhaps more by accident than design.
"Keeping the Dream Alive" still receives a lot of airplay at Christmas time and can be found included on many Christmas compilation albums.
