Whatever happened to The News?

In my younger days, Robert Dougal, Richard Baker etc, came into our houses and told us about the important things that had been happening, either here at home, or abroad.

Now, just look at the BBC, which is funded by the people of the United Kingdom.

We have a lady murdered in Bristol.

We have "possible review" of Doctor David Kelly's death.

But what takes the top headline?

A bunch of overpaid sportsmen winning a stupid cricket trophy!!!

Priorities, what priorities?

I didn't even know cricket was being played. I now know something called the ashes has been won.

I thought big wins like with the Ashes had always been big news?
Surely though the Kelly death and Bristol murder has had enough reporting for now.

So a stupid little game played by one quarter of the United Kingdom should take priority over the deaths of 2 human beings?

No wonder no-one likes the English! :p

    Ehm no actually.

However I would expect a News organisation to place the death of a human being above a stupid bloody game of cricket.

    Not rocket science really.

Don't worry you'll fit right in with some others on here.
If you can hate USA and Israel too they'll love it more.

Anyhow I am out of your thread don't want to stay where I'm hated.

Your spelling is only surpassed by your ignorance.

Or perhaps you'd like to ask these folks if they'd really like to see Cricket as the No.1 story?

The TV BBC or Sky news channels seem to be dominated by sport these days.
To me that isn't important unless it is of national interest and news worthy.
But still at least half an hour in every hour is a sports "round up."
I find myself going to other TV channel's to get the UK news. US channels and European news channels are far more interesting.
Bying a decent newspaper everyday is a nuisance and costly. So I usually catch up with current events on the internet.

Now that it's been established that people who work in radio like to hear the news every hour, what would be the answer if listeners were asked? Do they need news more frequently on radio than on tv? If so, why aren't more of them tuning in to catch it?

When people say listeners want to stay informed, is this because that's what they were told years ago and did whoever told them it only say it because it's what they were told during some war or other?

To be fair, even in the past if there was a sporting event like the Ashes or World Cup™ then that'd be in the headlines.

What you really mean is "Cricket is stupid to me, so why is it a headline?"

A national sporting win is more newsworthy than the death of one person.

A big sporting win is going to be the lead story on the news the day it happens.
    Because it is newsworthy.

Watch Al Jazeera, it's the only intelligent news channel, Sky news and the BBC are for celeb news.

    Quite.

As for the news having "gone downhill" a Cypriot I worked with back in the late 70s couldn't believe that wars and famine took a backseat to a vicar shooting a sparrow that had flown into the church. As he muttered at the time, "Only the English..." :p

I recall the summer of 1981 when England won two unlikely victories against the Aussies, and these were the lead story on the news. Nothing has changed.
