No this isn't a new joke about them walking into a pub...
Am I the only one that hates these characters? Everytime they turn up like a plague in Matt Smith's episodes I have to switch off.
When I see that Sontaran acting like a butler I think "What on earth would Link think of this insult to the Sontaran army?"
The Silurian and her maid are just as bad.
They would probably have been at home in the Douglas Adam's era but for me they are too cheesy.
I hope they never appear again with Doctor 12 coming soon.

But you do seem to be in the minority, at least.
Oh, and it's: the Silurian and her wife...
In a way, I want to dislike them. They're a joke that has gone on for a little too long. But I just can't - Strax is the only outlet for Moffat's wittier scripts, and I really enjoy the relationship between Jenny and Vastra. I think it'll be interesting to see them fleshed out even more in the days to come, and perhaps have them come up against their respective species soon.
The Crimson Horror featured them, and though not because of them directly, it was one of my all time favourite episodes.
Agree with Abomination's post...and certainly Strax in particular could become a 'one note' character that gets overused (some would interject "What do you mean, *could*??") , but for now he makes me chuckle and I'm quite happy for the gang to turn up occasionally.
Yes - next question.
agree completely.they are rubbish characters.the ridiculous comey sontaran has ruined what they were originaly and the silrurian looks like what he is,an actress with make up effects on.you can seeher human eyes an that spoils the effect.the oiginals from pertweesfirst season may have been more low budget, but they were far more effective as you couldn't see the eyes behind the mask.also, making her/it into a lesbian is ludicrous poltical correctness.
well that's spoilt his first series already.
I don't see why that is a problem. We saw what Strax would have been like had he not had the character development through being with Jenny and Vastrain NotD, as he turned back into the hateful xenophobic Sontaran he was before he owed the Doctor a favour . In fact, it would make an excellent story point - and would make for a good dilemma on his part: should he be fighting for or against either his new friends, or his clone brothers?
Firstly, convergent evolution could more than explain 'human' eyes on a reptile as evolved as humans (though it would be 'eyes with human characteristics'). Secondly, Vastra is not lesbian. Jenny might be, but Mme Vastra is not human. It is an inter-species relationship. Whether you frown upon that more, or less, is entirely your own opinion.
I will say one more thing, though. It isn't 'Political Correctness' of the character was always that way, and it enhances the character without being pushed as an agenda. So... Her being 'lesbian' is both moot, and not for a PC agenda.
Link would probably just ignore them and continue rescuing Zelda as usual. OTOH Linx would be very angry, but also slightly reassured that Strax's backstory is that he is a disgrace to the Sontaran army -- that's the reason why he was working as a nurse when we first met him.
I can understand not being fond of them but some of the more stronger dislike for three relatively lighthearted inoffensive does seem a little much though.
Personally I like them.
I'm a bit conflicted by Strax because I have never liked the modern Sontaran look or impression of stupidity that seems to go with them and Strax just compounds that, but, as a character on his own, not as a representative of the Sontarans, I can't help liking him!
You may be right. I have to admit I don't really remember the episode details that well. I was too busy being disappointed at how tiny they looked
I agree.
Crikey, Larry Niven wrote the Ringworld series, a bastion of hard sci-fi (pardon the pun), and that is chock-full of inter-species sex.
The species in question even have a separate name for it.
These two are pretty much staples of Doctor Who, particularly at times when the primary companion doesn't fill one of these. For that reason I don't see them going anywhere. However (like everything in the last series) it would be good to get a bit more time with them to flesh them out as characters a bit, or they risk becoming fairly shallow, one trick ponies, as pointed out above.
Bear in mind though that was pre-Strax.
Don't get me wrong; I love Strax as a character and am very happy we'll see more of him. But I do think his comedic treatment makes the Sontarans in general look far less of a threat.
When I watched Time Warrior as a child, I actually found Linx frightening. I doubt if any child now would find them so.
I love Strax: his advice to humans is, well, direct but often on the ball. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01m3gnt
