It's funny how when people talk about Sky's football rights they always mention La Liga as a big deal, yet then say that Bundesliga and Serie A are basically worthless to BT.
Which is it? Are foreign leagues worthwhile or worthless to attracting subscriptions?

Yes foreign league football gets very poor viewing figures. The English football league attracts more viewers than European league football. One of the poster showed the viewing figures from both in some detail in another thread last year.

I think what it means is non UK football will drive very few additional subscribers but if you have Sky Sports you may watch some Spanish football, in the same as if you currently have ESPN you may watch some Italian, French etc.
Despite what people have said I think that FA Cup and Europa League (usually 2 English clubs for their 2 games) until some get knocked out, is much more valuable and gets viewers than the limited number but very vocal supporters of European football.
I was more thinking (on Sky) new customers sign up for the BT Sports channels and they'll get ESPN thrown in for free. That is just speculation, of course.
And I see it's now been confirmed on the BT Sports Channel thread ESPN will be bundled with the BT Sports channels.
Yes, BT Vision on Twitter this afternoon confirms ESPN will be in the BT Sports pack and not sold seperately, and also reconfirming that BT Sport will be on Sky. So, we await the subscription cost, probably still a few months away?

In reality none of those leagues individually are really going to drive up subscriptions, infact there are very few rights out there that will, it's about having a number of decent rights that make a whole channel attractive

Aren't the only rights which drive subscriptions
English Premier League - dwarfs everything else
Then more minor
Cricket England Tests and ODI - why I buy Sky Sports
Golf - Sky is now only way to watch outside The Open and last 2 days of Masters
Rugby Union - but would need to get 6 Nations as pay only to really drive subscriptions. Don't think Premiership adds much
F1
Wimbledon - if it went pay although finals are listed

I would say it is a big deal to a certain extent, best two players in the world plus for last 3 season's home to Jose Mourinho. As a whole the Spanish season might not seem attractive but there is enough 'big' games to justify having it and the El Clasico's speak for themselves.
The fact that the deal is renewed on a yearly basis suggests that they value it and will continue to keep it for the foreseeable future.
One other thing, with all the other European football BT has acquired it is unlikely to have room in its schedule for adding La Liga anyway. Sky show every Real and Barca game amongst at least 4 live games per weekend, no way BT could provide or commit to such coverage.

.
Sky have La Liga rights for the current season plus the two after that. I agree that it certainly seems important to Sky, and is IMO by some way the most attractive overseas league for UK fans. Don't see that changing in the foreseeable future.

La Liga is not that big a deal for Sky.
They could but it would never be allowed on competition grounds so the idea is a non starter.

Probably means ESPN will leave ireland too

Seeing as BT bought ESPN in Ireland as well, I'd say yes

Well considering companies such as Sky who are British and many other UK companies operate in Ireland, I should think he'll have a problem.
Unless of course they murder his friend and try to make him feel guilty for not being thankful.
If BT got La Liga rights they would make room
I find it hypocritical of people proclaiming to be republican or in another sense 'Irish' then go and decide to move to England.
You might as well just live in Northern Ireland
Difference between Sky & BT is that the telecoms company has got British in it's name.
So what does the first 'B' in B Sky Broadcasting stand for?
LOL... so funny... that was a massive fail on his side!
