He wasn't in prison - that was years ago. He'd already got out of prison the first time he left Eastenders which was about 6 years ago.
True Dean only served 4 months he went to prison in October 2007 and was released in February 2008. As far as we know he's never been back to prison and simply lived off screen during his 2008 - 2014 absence.
