Let's hope that the Thursday night repeat slot is given over to archive material - classic previous shows either in their original form or edited to fit the time slot. How about Alan Freeman's final R1 Saturday rock show from 1978? Just been listening to it courtesy of Radio Rewind - wonderful. What about 40 years of year end chart shows starting with David Jacobs in 1962? Then there's the archive of great Radio 1 / 2 documentaries - the choice probably doubles once Gambo's ones can be used. Maybe an opportunity for partial redemption for the controller.

well I've heard it's going to be a Vanessa Feltz highlights of the week show
Allinson was dropped from his night time show in 2004, then from his Saturday Afternoon show in 2005, before being reinstated to R2 in 2009. In the time he was away from regular presenting duties at R2, in 2006, he took on a Saturday morning slot on BBC Radio Oxford then a number of BBC Local Stations took on 'Allinson's Albums' BFBS also took this show on as well.
I was awake at the start of his show a few weeks back when he started with David Bowie's execrable 'Blue Jean' followed by some abysmal dirge by Coldplay.
His first words were ' Well you won't find music better than that anywhere'.
I switched off. Good riddance to the old bore.
Bollocks they don't take comfort at all they just listen, thats it If they don't like what they hear they'll just listen to something else.
Bollocks ??????? that's the difference there isn't anything else that compares to Radio 2 overnights on any station in the UK so what is there besides all talk/classical/robotic Smooth?

Bit harsh, but each to their own I guess. As people on here have said before, he has a bit of a love/hate style of presenting. Some people say he edges too close towards the Gary Davies style of the 80/90s which is no doubt why R2 keep shifting him around the schedule/dropping him.
I thought he might do alright working for the current controller when he got reinstated, at least he had a better run this time than with that last woman who ran R2 and filled the schedules up with bloody TV presenters and celebs!
I'm not sure how these planned changes will save the BBC any money. After all somebody will need to sit in Broadcasting House and make sure that the recorded programmes are broadcast without any problems, and that somebody will of course need to be paid.

I have a feeling this isn't the end of it; on the Tony Blackburn thread someone posted info from his Facebook page about a new show on a Sunday. Perhaps moving Sounds of the 60s with Tony a new host? Easily scope to trim weekends down and save a fortune. And then there's the Vanessa Feltz show... (Although I'm starting to quite like her, more so when she fills in for Jezza)

Yes but a teccy isnt going to be paid £1500 a show like a presenter would.....

Trust me they'll find another option even if it's not a radio station. People who work nights at the weekendgenerally have lots of wierd choices and they probably manage ok.
Radio 2 is not the only option on the dial. What is it about Alex that makes him such compulsive listening? It's average music like most of Radio 2 mainstreem and he's like a poor mans Ken Bruce in his style.
Well i am very shocked at this news and to push Alex to weekends is not right and im sure its not a move he would have wanted to do.
I have set up a Save the Alex lester best time of the day show facebook page to get as many people to like and add things, so the BBC can see what people think of these changes.
Blame the previous Labour Govt who blocked any Licence fee rise in 2010. Typical of that party, obsesed with throwing benefits at people, yet block a licence fee rise cos that effects there core voters, most of thom dont work and therfor watch the most tv! Oh how ironic.

Oh FFS go over to the politics forum where you read this sort of nonsense all the time. Most Labour voters out of work? Have any evidence to this crap? Especially considering it was a Tory government that introduced things like incapacity benefit.

This is relevant to this topic as Labour blocked an increase to the licence fee, now this is having an effect on the corporation right about now...!

That part is correct. Also the Salford move was forced On the BBC by the Labour government which was an unnecessary expense. But the rest was unfounded nonsense.

He's got a slightly off kilter sense of humour that suits overnights. He's created a, for want of a better word, cult. Having had long periods of insomnia over the years, I know that that sense of not being the only person awake is invaluable. Some of the best radio I've ever heard has been overnights because of the intimacy that grows up between the presenter and his audience: Alex is in the same league as the old Clive Bull show.

I still have to disagree its the point of a live presenter that counts for many I feel having someone out there is what matters
The latest Private Eye has a piece on the Alex Lester overnight show being cut on page 11 saying:
His show has more than 200,000 more listeners than the stations closest commercial rival
and
Vanessa Feltz's show "receives consistently dismal marks in the Audience Appreciation Index, the qualitative research the BBC undertakes for every show."
"but when the plan was mooted to ditch Feltz and let Lester absorb her airtime it was nixed by the BBC Trust. Why? Because it would involve sacking a female presenter in her 50s and you can't do that any more."
I can believe an internal source, who the Eye is presumably quoting, would have access to the listener and audience appreciation figures but would the Trust be so heavily involved in decisions on presenters?

But we're talking about a radio show that is all. The world will not end and no one will top themself just because Radio 2 broadcast a recorded show for 2 hours. It's not the befriending service it's a radio show. People will just continue with their life.
If someone is so lonely that they feel their life is over just because a radio station won't have a presentet, then they have some personal issues that are deep routed within them. I'd suggest coynselling is the answer to their problems.

I am not sure if Tony was referring to an extra Sunday show on Radio 2 or on a commercial station. He already has shows on Magic and a station in Kent.
On the last Saturday in June, Pick of the Pops is going to be on for an extra hour. I don't know if this is to be permanent or just a one off to 'test the water'. If it is a success, which I am sure it will be considering POTP has gained a million listeners since Tony took over, I would expect it to be permanent.

Probably not. It's rare that some would volunteer for demotion and a lot less money.
