I lived in England during my childhood so actually got to see kids programmes during the holls (unlike Scotland where you would miss most of them because of the dates)

    Chopper Squad Australian show
The Flying Kiwi New Zeland show
    The Henderson Kids
The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew American show
Why Don't You (nearly always from Cardiff or Newcastle)
    Sport Billy
    Red Hand Gang
Roland Rat, Michaela Strachan, Mad Lizzie on TVAM
    Lassie
    Kickstart

They always used to have a film aimed at kids or families

    BMX Bandits
Terence Hill / Bud Spencer film (They were big in the 80s)
    UK Children's Film Foundation Films
Digby the biggest dog in the world
Carry On Films (They still do that now )

Endless adverts for toys like Big Truck, Simon, Twister, He Man etc and not forgetting Kinder Egg CHOCKADOOBIE.:D

I can't remember the specific years they appeared between 78 and 87 I think.

We had it good. TV don't bother now during the holidays (Not for Kids anyway)

    Robinson Crusoe
    White Horses
    Why Don't You...
    Double Deckers
    Tomfoolery
And if you were lucky Thunderbirds!

And then it was off out for the day with a jam sandwich and home for teatime.

    God, I feel old now : (

The Pink Panther was brilliant. I also loved:
    Blood and Honey
    Stay Tooned
(both with Tony Robinson, a hero of mine) :)

Why Don't You - I can remember that I couldn't stand the Belfast gang. Must have been the effect the unfamiliar accent had on me as a child.

Space Sentinels. Loved it. There was only one season of this cartoon, 13 episodes. Not many of my friends remember it.

Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle. Loved this cartoon.

Ulysses 31. Originally ran from 1981 to 1982. This cartoon was on telly every school summer holiday as I remember though.

Silas, Red Hand Gang, The Littlest Hobo and others mentioned in the thread spring to mind. But if it was a sunny day I'd be enjoying a jubbly whilst melting tar with a magnifying glass, or doing something else that would probably be considered a bit odd today. Newting, for example.
Do kids today have any time for sticklebacks and the like or is it all consoles and facebook?

You're not the only one!! I spent a lot of my pre-teen summers with my aunt as both of my parents worked full time. It was great, as she had twin girls a year older than me. We'd have breakfast, pack a bag with (as you'd said) Jam sarnies, crisps, cake fruit and a bottle of pop, and we'd then go out all day walking the fields, paddling in the streams and generally loving being outdoors. Ahh it was ruddy brilliant.

And White Horses was an absolute must watch programme for me. The theme tune can reduce me to a flood of tears every time I hear it. I loved that programme.

Defo Pugwall and Pugwall's Summer. Channel 4 was ace in the summer holiday for kids.

I guess the 5 terrestial channels don't make an effort no more as there are so many kids channels.

I was just going to mention this but I think it's 'Play Chess' you're thinking of. And yes it was as boring as it sounds.

As a child of the 70's most things have been covered here already.
