The Official Asian Music Thread (Kpop, Jpop, Cpop)

Noticed there are a few asian music fans on the forum
Thought I'd create a topic for general chatter on genres, artists and albums. Usually most kpop or other forums are full of crazy fans so this is going to be a more relaxed general thread where you can post what you want without getting trolled/flamed.

I consider myself a fan of taiwanese artists and bands (infact ill be downloading Jay Chou's new album today) i also have a large interest in kpop as well. What about you guys?

Oh and non of that Bollywood crap please. :D I kid I kid :p
Don't mind discussing bollywood here as well if there are more fans.

Oh God, my J-Pop knowledge is terrible. I only know a few songs and they're usually the ones featured in Japanese video games. But i have heard of Ayumi and i do like a couple of her songs :)

Me too. Who's comeback are you looking forward to this year? Girls Generation seem to be getting all the attention at the moment aha.

I've been listening to Jay Chou's new album today and i like it, much better than his last album. it really reminds me of his older songs with a modern twist unlike his last album which was a bit too different from his usual stuff.

Well, the SNSD comeback is one I am anticipating a lot actually! But I am also very much looking forward to 2ne1's comeback as well as Exo's.
I'm also fairly interested to see what T-ara will do next tbh, they're sort of at a crossroads now so it will be interesting to see which road they take.
Other groups I love that I'm sure will comeback next year are Shinee, f(x), After School and 4minute.
Ooh and I hope Infinite makes a comeback as well.

I'd recommend Namie's Past < Future and Play albums, or if you want to start with her compilations, download 181920 (her 90s eurobeat and dance pop songs) or Best Fiction (her more R'n'B and electro pop 2000s material). I think she's great - one of the best pop performers IMO, she manages to combine brilliant choreography with live vocals, she's up there with Janet Jackson and Britney at her peak, I think. When she appeared on the Japanese music scene in the mid 90s, she launched a fashion revolution and started the trend amongst Japanese women for tanning, hair dye, mini skirts and platform boots, a bit like the Madonna wannabes of the 80s.

Here's a picture of Jolin Tsai helping keep Namie afloat during a night out last summer :D

    http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m6jw3v0snW1qd5658o1_400.jpg

Ayumi is just this machine that never stops, she has so many songs, albums, remix albums, compilations, I don't know where to begin, but I guess her 'I...Am' and 'Secret' albums would be a good introduction to her early and later sounds. Jolin is heavily inspired by Ayumi in image and music and it's causes strife between their respective fanbases, with some of Jolin's Chinese fans trying to turn it around and claiming it's Ayumi who is copying Jolin :D It's all very confusing, but as far as I know, they both like each other and Jolin has spoken openly about being a fan.

Hikaru Utada is another good singer songwriter, her first album, released when she was 16 is Japan's all time best selling, but I prefer her later works. I'd recommend Heart Station and Ultra Blue.

Me too, can't wait for SNSD and EXO, 2NE1 and Double yoon/4minute. Oh and Shinee of course. And i do agree, i'd like to see what infinite bring in the new year.

I hope to see some Super Junior stuff, even if it's just their subunits. I also hope to see maybe UKiss and Teen Top.

I've been listening to a lot of 2pm songs recently. (and solo) so i want some good stuff from them!

Thanks mate, i'll check out Hikari Utada and Namie, I've heard a lot of Ayumi's songs and i agree she's an excellent singer. Her songs are really well done as well. Didn't know about Jolin being inspired by her. Oh and about the copying thing, fans will be fans eh

Yeh if you think one direction fans or justin bieber fans are crazy you haven't met kpop fans :D

It's literally war when a rumour is spread or something insignificant (that affects a kpop star) happens.

But hey, thats why i started this thread so we can have a nice civilised discussion (famous last words) about our favourite artists/bands and not have to sift through the crap on other forums with crazy fans :P

I can't believe i;ve never actually listened to Namie. Then again like i said i only know a very few select Japanese artists. I've got her songs on replay atm :D

Thanks for the heads up about her. Might branch out a bit this new year and see what other great Asian artists i haven't discovered. (probably over 1000 or something :p )

Oh and Ultra Blue by Hikaru is awesome!

I've been listening to a bit of JPM today. (they're a Taiwanese band. Can't get over how good they are!)

It's the same with Rock threads really, a few people bite on to them but it's mainly rampant with threads related to pop music (unless you count the 'Led Zeppelin vs The Who' thread who unique and Deep Purple have been keeping alive :D

Haha, I noticed that so thought I'd create one thread for all asian music as ive seen a few kpop ones drop off or a few jpop ones have a few posters then drop off.

Fine, i'll allow bollywood music discussion for the sake of the thread :p

Anyway, ive been listening to S.H.E & Ella Chen's new albums today. They're so amazing

Henry needs to have solo activities. He's too good to just be in a subunit.

Henry is amazing. He should be part of the main Super Junior group. SJM's new album is great, they have some really great songs on there. And I agree aha, typical SJ video :p

HanGeng's second solo album sounds great as well. Well the songs that are out so far sound great.

I have heard of Faye Wong, haven't heard any of her music though. Thanks for the links, ill check them out.

What did people think of SNSD's comeback?

Faye Wong is great. My cousins went to one of her concerts, and they enjoyed her immensely :D

I've been a fan of Taiwanese singer A-Mei since 1997 (when I was 4). She's the Taiwan Whitney/Mariah because she has a great voice :D

Here's her cover of Faith Hill's "There You'll Be" (officially recorded for the Asian version of "Pearl Harbor"): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJAAde4lqps

    Her more recent songs:

    And some of her classics:

I have no idea if this counts as Jpop, but they're a band...and they're Japanese...does that qualify?

The Mirraz; my favourite band of last year. Had four excellent singles in my 2012 top 50, of which this was possibly the best: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlLW1szksP8

Any other fans on DS? I think I'm the only person who's ever mentioned them.

Heard good things about them, but never got the time to listen to their music. Will do that soon though :D

Yes! A-Mei is amazing! I love Rainie Yang and Jolin Tsai as well.

Have you heard of a band called fahrenheit, they're a taiwanese group and even though they're not together anymore I still listen to their songs because they literally do not have a bad song. They are quite famous in Taiwan, they did the taiwan tourism song as well as the Disneyland hong kong song. Im on my phone so I cant post links. But those of you into cpop or taiwanese singers/groups have to check then out. You will not be dissapointed

Oh sorry aha, yeah they are awesome. See none of my family/friends likes or has heard cpop and they all think its weird that I like it, so that's why I kind of assume the same with others. My family who are south asian and so they think bollywood music is great. You can read the first post to see how much I "love" bollywood music.

Are you into any taiwanese drama's?

Oh and if you're a fan of SJM and tvxq then you should check this out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5vqttPxjwE&feature=youtube_gdata_player
