I thought the producers said there would be no major deaths this series, so if anyone dies, i can't see it being any of the characters we have grown to love.

I would love Daisy to have a much bigger role downstairs maybe taking over some of Mrs Patmore's tasks, maybe thinking more about herself as a replacement when Mrs Patmore eventually retires from service

    Filming pictures from Bampton.
There's the Nanny. Scheming or no? I can't tell. It looks like Tom is with Isobel and then they meet her or run into her.

I really don't find her to be anywhere close to as pretty as Sybil. She's attractive, but all this "sultry" and "stunning" stuff the show keeps telling us? I disagree. I really hope she is a schemer but the fact that she is there in the CS is making me nervous. Schemer or no.

but Tom and Isobel look so nice together. Like he is her surrogate son now.

"The show" hasn't said anything about her character. Not a word.

Also mentioned on the Splash site was mention that today's filming in Bampton was Matt Milne's (Alfred) last day on the programme. I'm personally not too bothered about him going but I wonder if he's going because he's got other stuff lined up or he's being written out for storyline purposes.

Actually the show made a statement that "Tom cannot resist the stunning Daisy" or something along those lines. It was quoted in The Sun. I don't remember the exact wording but the word "stunning" was in the quoted statement from a show source. But maybe it was a rogue source? Didn't sound like it.

I think it was another paper or two that used the word "sultry" of their own accord, but "stunning" came from at least one statement from the show.

To each his own, I just don't find her stunning. She is attractive though.

No, there was no statement. You're thinking of press reports that are unattributed.

There have been no press releases about this storyline or relevant characters, just speculation in the press.

So what is this? A rogue source? Maybe not a press release, but someone said it.

    http://www.express.co.uk/news/showbiz/420119/Is-this-Downton-Abbey-s-Tom-Branson-new-love-interest-Daisy-Lewis-spotted-on-set

And the quoted sentence about the "secret affair" was originally printed in the Express. So someone said something.

    Did they? Who is "someone"?

It's not a statement from the production team. It's not official, it's almost certainly made up. That's why there's no name on it.

The Express is a sorry rag run by a pornographer. It would be censured regularly by press regulators if its hateful proprietor hadn't opted out of the system. No one believes a word of anything in it....

I repeat - there hasn't been any official word on this new character or the plotline.

One has to read with a pinch of salt some of the info being put out by the tabloid newspapers in the UK. There's a lot of speculation out there, which may or may not have an element of truth to it. No doubt Carnival don't mind, as it keeps fans and forums busily talking about the programme during its long off-season, thus keeping it in the public arena.

We shall have to see exactly how all these spoilers pan out, come September. Nevertheless it's fun to comment and speculate, even if it doesn't turn out exactly as one hoped or expected.

Wow, I am confused. All of the sudden these stories appeared in a bunch of papers saying there would be a romance, a secret affair, they would be "the talk of Downton," he would be ready to move on, then that she was a schemer, etc.

Did someone at these two papers actually just make up two or three sentences worth of info and put them in quotation marks to make them look official? Seriously? That is so weird.

And at any rate, why would the show not want to say something about the character and the storyline at this point? They have at least given character descriptions of several new characters and indicated a bit of what their storylines might involve.

Why would they be withholding all information on this character, then? So they really haven't said a single thing about her?

And what about what EM said, that Tom had to consider whether to "marry this working class girl" and "bring her back to Downton"? Did she make that up?

Well, I don't know what to think then.

They're not spoilers though. And about as reliable as Imdb - have to laugh when people quote that as a source....

What about what EM said about Tom having a working-class GF that he had to consider whether to marry?

It's obvious a new woman will come into Tom Branson's life - just as there will be romance for Rose, Edith and Mary or varying sorts - but there hasn't been one official word on this plotline.

It's not a case of withholding information, just that there hasn't been any official statement barring one or two regarding Mary, a few guest appearances and the main Christmas special casting. Everything else is press speculation. Mostly even the names are wrong....

But wasn't what Elizabeth said true? About Tom having a working-class GF (who I assume might be Nanny)? And about whether he can marry her? She just said that recently. Just like RJC said Thomas has a secret on the new Ladies' Maid. Those statements must have been sanctioned or the actors could not have said them.

These two things are attributed to a named source - Elizabeth McGovern and Rob James-Collier. Surely you can see the difference between this and a tabloid rag supposedly quoting a "source" it doesn't name??????

You have to differentiate between the two.

Fair enough. My point is that what has been said in the press lines up with what Elizabeth said. So why shouldn't I believe the stuff about the secret affair/romance/whatever when she has basically come right out and said that he has a woman in his life for whom he has romantic feelings? And given that EM said that woman is working-class, who else would it be but the Nanny?

Not all of it lines up, but it makes sense. Whether or not it came from an official source or press release.

It's like last year. There was rampant speculation in the press that Dan was leaving. A lot of people said it was just spec, but I believed it. And it turned out to be true.

Sorry, Scoutlet, but if I write "Tom is hit by a meteor" will you believe that too? "The show" did NOT say she is "stunning", "Tom can't resist" etc etc.

You need to differentiate between attributed sources and tabloid nonsense. And if you want to believe it, fair enough but don't say that it came from the "show". It didn't. End of story.

I am differentiating. And no, I would not believe it if you said Tom was hit by a meteor. I am not an idiot, despite what you seem to believe.

I choose to believe what EM said. That he has a working class GF and the question of marriage is raised. That sounds serious to me. And I am also assuming she is the Nanny, since I have seen a couple of scenes where they are filming in the same vicinity. Including the picture of the outdoor party they filmed where the woman he is talking to is almost certainly her. I have eyes.

I am skeptical of what the papers say, but they certainly reinforce what the attributed source said. Their statements are hyperbolic, I am sure. I doubt it will be as exciting as all that.

Anyway, if anything what EM said makes it even more clear that he has a relationship that at some point progresses to a pretty serious level. That's all I really need to know. I don't care about whether it is a secret affair. I am just curious about the whole thing.

At any rate, if she turns out to be someone other than the Nanny I will be pretty shocked. They will have pulled over another surprise, I guess.

I never said there wouldn't be a relationship with a nanny. As Elizabeth McGovern went on the record over that, it would be foolish to deny it...

My point is that you claim that "the show" said this and that when it's all just press speculation. Bottom line - if there isn't a name attached to a quote (be it producer, writer or actor) it's made up.

Okay, so it's pretty much what they said. He has a relationship with the Nanny. Maybe the way it was worded was made up, but the fundamental and important plot is exactly as stated. No matter how you spin it, that's a serious S4 storyline that has pretty much been confirmed. And we know who is playing her. And also that as of the end of filming the season, she is still filming, whether they end up together at the end of the day or not.

It's not spin. It's sorting the wheat from the chaff... Is that so hard???

Massive Downton fan over here. So so so so excited for series 4. I know its sad but I can't help wishing the rest of summer away to get to September :P Love this time of year!

Interested to see where they'll take it next but I have faith. My flatmate asked me the other day if I had seen the advert for the upcoming series, is there one being shown already or has she got it wrong? Apologies if this has already been mentioned.

Following up on what is source and what is unsourced Zap2it, see link:
    http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2013/08/downton-abbey-season-4-anna-and-bates-have-a-period-of-happiness-says-star-joanna-froggatt.html

Jo is talking about Anna and Bates in S4. I suspect most what she has said is accurate but of course one must always allow for editing.

Without rehashing all that has been said previously on spoilers or not, at the end of the day surely all of this should just be a bit of fun, relaxation away from whatever your day is like and looking forward to S4.

The advert or trailer I saw was for the first three series, run backwards! They're running the first three series again, starting later this month, I believe.
