Life here isn't impossible without a car, it's just difficult. We have a bus service to the nearest town 40 minutes away that runs every couple of hours between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday. Our village shop closes half day on a Saturday and does not open till Monday morning. If you don't have a car, you're pretty much stuck in the evenings and on a Sunday.
Thanks for bringing this thread back up. Think I may have missed it first time round.
I live in a rural area in a very small village, with no shops, no bus service, and last year the PO (which basically just sold stamps etc in someone's front room) was closed. The school closed a few years ago. and the village kids are now buzzed by minibus to the nearest town which is over 5 miles away and the railway station is about 9 miles. So yes a car is very essential.
