For a while, I have had problems with my ears and just recently again, my left ear has been in agony on the inside. I have already been to a&e but I feel I need a second opinion what do you think I should do?

Sorry for the spelling, I just got a new iPhone!!

What did they tell you at A&E?

They gave me antibiotics, which didn't do exactly anything, my dad is telling me to get referred, I used to have ear problems when I was younger and hasn't really gone away.

It sounds like an ear infection. I get one every year, have done since I was born.
Did you finish the antibiotics? And how long ago did you start the course? It normally takes at least 4 days for my ear to feel less painful.

I was on them for a week which was back in March, but my hearing has been dull since January, been back and forth to the doctors and they keep telling me to use olive oil..... I have tried everything, I'm just sick of having a constant headache and losing my balance all the time. But the only good side is, is that I'm sleeping really well as I feel like I can block the pain out.

I have had all kinds of ear problems since the age of six and am now completely deaf in one ear. I would say to keep on at your GP for a referral to an ENT dept as it seems as if something is not right. Doctors do tend to just keep telling you to use olive oil these days.

That's what I'm going to do fibromite59. I have an appointment with my GP on 4th June so I'm going to ask then. My mum is going to come with me this time to help explain. Because it's starting to affect my everyday life now.

Don’t ask your GP for a referral to an ENT Consultant.....INSIST on a referral; don’t be fobbed-off with another round of tablets/drops etc.

It’s a recurring theme on this forum; i.e. ’patients’ on a merry-go-round of lengthy ineffective treatment by a GP. I personally have been in that invidious position.

I'd thought I'd bump this thread as it'll be a waste of time making another one.

I have been to the referral and I have to go for am ear test on Friday.

But I feel the symptoms are getting worse. I have constant headaches, a croaky voice, always tried and constant tinnitus and pain!

I have had wax removed also, but the pain is still there!!!

I am at my wits end!

Sorry to hear about your ear problems. I had a burst ear drum when I was a child. The pain was horrendous. I am now deaf in that ear. Fun! I really hope you get things sorted out and hopefully somebody with some experience can come along and help you here. Good luck Nicola, let us know how you get on.

The important thing is that you get referred to, and seen by, a specialist audiology consultant and that you list all the ear issues, including the pain, that you have had to deal with. I'd also suggest asking about relevant patient support groups/charities too. Good luck! :)

Thank you for your support... I went to see the audiologist last Friday and apparently my left ear is congested..... But I now have to see an otolaryngologist or something.... I don't know what that will involve...
