I think we're getting away from the argument which is 'game(s) were on free TV and now they aren't' and not everyone can get the free channel. ......
Which is not a new issue of course- Channel 5 bought exclusive free-to-air rights to a number of sports events, including football, that a significant proportion of consumers had no means/signal of viewing in their home.

Any territory where there's a potential "overspill", including Ireland. I don't know what issues, if any, need to be overcome- free-to-air, free-to-view, satellite footprint- but am not assuming that they can't be overcome, as ITV have managed in the past.

The "free games" are a marketing tool for BT, in my opinion, and whilst non-availability via Sky might initially serve that purpose best- and encourage "early subscriptions"- denying free access on the Sky platform may not be the best means of encouraging subscriptions further on.

Or a contractual obligation. Perhaps BT/UEFA weren't aware back in 2013, that the free channel would be on a 'lite' mux?

Yes- I acknowledged in an earlier post, that:
..... BT neither have an obligation of law (they may have some obligations to UEFA) to provide free access to its content, or to provide such access via a method of consumer choice. ....

So bt put a channel on freeview which ever tv has had built in since 2010 so it's a shambles that it's not on sky!!!
If people really want to watch it they'd would have got a aerial by now how long ago was it announced that bt won CL and EL and they would be shown on bt sport on freeview

Yes I want to see it but FTA should be what is says FREE TO AIR and available on all formats.

I will be producing an open Letter to UEFA and BT and all the major sponsors, the normal punter is being shafted "Football is nothing without fans" We need to fight to give our sport back to our punters.

Image quality on Showcase was worse than a well worn VHS from 1980 being watched through a thick layer of fog. I don't know how BT are getting away with it. The same match in SD on BT red button on Sky was like watching in HD compared to Showcase.

What is on Showcase all the time when matches are not on?, is it just promos for BT?, or does it have normal ads?

And you will be glad to know they will do for many years to come....I doubt Sky will get these rights back again and it really hurts them not having it.

Tonight's picture looks better. Or is it me?

There is still severe 'aliasing' (alternating dark and light dashes on diagonal white line markings, especially those nearly horizontal, there may be a better name for it). As the camera pans, the aliasing effects move along the lines so it's an appallingly distracting strobe-like effect.

Never seen that effect before on any UK TV channel apart from BT Sport SD this season... and I didn't notice it at all last season. They've done *something* to wreck it and if I didn't have HD thrown into my package at no extra cost (which is OK), I'd be tempted to cancel.

Depends on who they want to reach out to. There are die-hard fans of the clubs involved who will pay over the odds to watch their teams, those that will pay to watch the competition as a whole (probably a lot less) and then those of us - maybe the majority - who will watch it "if it's on" but otherwise couldn't give a monkeys.

Then you have the touchline sponsors and the ads, which would they prefer, a few hundred thousand watching pay TV or a few million watching it FTA? If you think having pitchside ads isn't important...then why are they there?

Champions League football is like the Ashes, I'll read it in the paper tomorrow or might just look the scores up online tonight. *Shrugs shoulders*

I'm sure Sky will only be bothered if not having them hurts the bottom line.

By the same token, BT won't want them if it isn't helping the business by having them, I.e. if the broadband subs don't come in at the required rate, then what's the point?

And how many of those have cancelled because it's not on there now? It's only 29 nights a year, most of which are swamped with strong primetime content from the terrestrials, and 12 of those 29 are the over-inflated group stage of a competition that only gets interesting from February.

Had this problem since the day they launched BT Sport Europe (Sky SD) . All other BT Sport channels are fine - only the Europe channel is suspect, exactly as you described.

Trying to get a answer from the helpline why this is happening has been impossible, so tonight i pulled the plug & cancelled.

Then blame ITV for not being able to outbid to retain those rights!
It would be no different had Sky secured them exclusively, only, people wouldn't be acting like they're entitled to something for nothing!

Yes, it very much is, just read back a few pages and see the endless complaining and moaning and even one claiming to be making an open letter to BT and UEFA!

It would be the same if Sky had exclusivity. There is literally no doubt about that.
