Hi,
My old Dell Inspiron Laptop died on me a few months ago (lasted about 6 years) finally in a position to get a new one but I am amazed with the amount of choice out there and find it all very confusing.
Would really appreciate some help in what I should be looking for. I have about £400 - £450 to spend. I am not a gamer. I used my laptop to download music/the odd movie. Use Office, surf the net, store music and photos (the odd photo editing but nothing professional) and of course using the internet.
all hint and tips appreciated.

Both of these are pretty comparable. Problem with them will be battery life so it depends how mobile you want to be with the laptop.

For a better battery life (about 4 hours) and much more portable.
Having bought reconditioned in the past and recommended to others I've not had any problems yet with them.
Two year guarantee too at no extra cost.

However, I have seen this particular model priced at £399 in the pre-Christmas sales at Argos, so have a look on a price comparison site.
You get a standard guarantee of 3 years on the above.
In any event, if you don't get a standard installation disk for Windows, make a set of recovery disks as soon as possible after any purchase of a PC/laptop.
Also, make a drivers and applications CD/DVD if possible. The above model allows you to do so.
In Windows 7 Home Premium, there is the option to create a system repair disk, under All Programs/Maintenance. I'd recommend you do that as well.
General recommendations for your price range and requirements.
A quad core processor, e.g. Intel i3.
A hard drive of at least 320 Gb, or better 500 Gb.
At least 3 USB 2.0 ports.
At least 3 Gb of DDR3 RAM.
Windows 7 Home Premium.
But for the 3 year warranty the £499 is overpriced.
My personal preference is for a dual core CULV laptop at about £350 with towards 10 hours battery life. Such as a HP DM1, Samsung X120 or Asus UL30A.

Of course there is a much better value one from Sony online if you were to go on their website for £539 that looks positively delish.
I agree. So, it's definitely worth shopping around.
I thought I would bring Acer into the equation, since they have often been recommended in this forum, but as the famous Clint Eastwood quote goes (in the film Dirty Harry), 'Opinions are like *********, everybody has one'.
