The Difference thank you for the info about BBC WM being the first BBC local station to appear on freeview.
Living in the Bristol area,at least it will be either Bristol Rovers or Bristol City,
as opposed to the London Birmingham Manchester or Yorkshire areas which have half a dozen teams to choose from

    :
BBC Radio Bristol isn't the first BBC Local Radio station to be added to Freeview. In the (West) Midlands, BBC WM has been on the platform for a while and has been consistently been broadcasting commentaries. I think they typically go with a DAB commentary when there's a split, although Connor would probably be better placed to tell you which of the Birmingham and Wolverhampton DAB mux they favour when there's a three-way split. So it would appear that there isn't anything stopping them from broadcasting commentaries in this way.
Most of the time the game that goes out on Freeview is the one on DAB with a co commentator. If both games or none of the games have a co commentator it would be the away team. The reason why I stopped listing what game was on Freeview was because I couldn't find out some weeks but, if people want me to I will do my best each week to find out and post it.
    :
Ideally that would be the case, but it's possible that it may be a term of WM's contract with Aston Villa that local derbies played at Villa Park must count under their quota regardless of any other rights that they hold.

In any case, I'd be interested to know how many home Aston Villa commentaries BBC WM are limited to. Would it be 10 games like their contract with Walsall (both home and away) a few seasons back? If it's much higher, it doesn't seem like much of a cap - Villa will play at least 21 competitive fixtures at Villa Park this season (including the cups), which could rise to a maximum of 24 (if they get to the FA Cup Quarter-Finals on the back of four home ties). They could easily pass over five or six home games on Saturdays or midweek evenings when all four of their top division sides are playing.
I don't know how many home games they can cover and I don't think they have the rights to all away games to. On one Saturday in August Villa where at home and it was a 12:45pm kick off WM did there normal "early kick off with Daz Hale" and just updates. So far this season they have done 5 out of the 9 Villa home games. Over the last few years they haven't done any Home games when they have been in a cup match and with Villa being the only side play in the FA Cup on Sunday 4th January It will be interesting what they do. I think it could be just updates with one of the member of the team in the studio (most likely Mike Taylor) and a man at the ground.

Terribly sad news about Clarke Carlisle. We can all only hope he is on the mend and will be back on his feet sooner rather than later. Before hearing the news last night I was going to mention that the reason why Clarke didn't cover Absolute Radio's game at the weekend (according to Russ Williams on Twitter) was because he was poorly, but it rather pales into insignificance given what has happened.

Sorry to be bringing up this sentiments in an otherwise sombre message, but I would like to wish all the contributors to and readers of this thread a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Manchester United v Newcastle United - Darren Stannage
Sunderland v Hull City - Grahame Lloyd
Swansea City v Aston Villa - Sam Fleet
West Bromwich Albion v Manchester City - Clive Edwards

Newstalk's reports from non-commentary Premier League games have been taken from IRN, with them also having Don McClean updating all of the day's horse racing. talkSPORT didn't have any coverage of the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park, which surprised me as I thought it would be part of their Racecourse Media Group commentary deal.

talkSPORT have interesting plans for their coverage of Sunday's fixtures - Stan Collymore will be co-commentating on Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United alongside Sam Matterface from midday, before heading from White Hart Lane to Loftus Road to do punditry on QPR v Crystal Palace and then host Call Collymore from there between 5-7pm. In between, Jim Proudfoot and Ray Parlour will commentate on Southampton v Chelsea from 2.05pm and then they'll be second half Around the Grounds from the 3pm kick-offs.

Amazed that Graham Taylor continues to get paid for summarising. Adds nothing. (currently doing Arsenal v QPR game on 5 Live) repeats what commentator says when he is prompted to say something. Does not analyse or explain anything. So poor.

He doesnt say anything! He says exactly what the commentator has said. Does not analyse a goal that has just been scored and sometimes its as if he is just there to watch a game as a spectator and forgets what he is paid to do

Horse racing from Kempton Park - Aly Rowell

(*) The first half of the Newport County game was treated like an 'uninterrupted commentary', but you could tell things had changed by the second half, as you'd have bursts of commentary, but still go to the Swansea City and Wrexham games every now and then.

That's interesting. I wonder if stations have people on stand by for situations like that?
