Thought you guys might like to know that I'm receiving D1 Northern Ireland loud and clear in Colwyn Bay, North Wales! Anyone else UK based enjoying a few extra stations too?

    That's pretty good going.

Parts of South west Scotland should be receiving signals from Divis, I would imagine. The South of Kintyre might be getting Limavady.

By the way has a new transmitter been switched on in the last few weeks as the signal has only just appeared?

Been on since Friday 26th July.

I know quite incredible. I thought it may have been atmospherics pushing the signal further than normal but it's still there and very clear. Really pleased to hear Downtown Radio.

I take it that there has been no news yet as to what new services could be appearing on the local mux? I thought we would have at least seen one new station by now considering Classic FM has left

    Nope, nothing so far..

Q 102.9 are silent at the moment with just scrolling text, and Smooth Radio 70's is closing on Sunday so it's starting to get crap again.

I really like Smooth Radio 70's and I'm very angry it's being replaced by another yoof/RnB/urban/dance station. GRRRRRRRRFRRRRR.

We could be waiting a while for anything new to appear.

U105 have also radically changed their line up with all the wee specialised shows disappearing from Monday in favour of Glen Pavis. Another GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Can't see U 105 being on DAB anytime soon.

It is a shame that Smooth 70's is being replaced on D1. Surely one of the main points of DAB was for a wider variety of stations and yet they are axing what was a rather good station which attracted quite a considerable audience.

In saying that I have no problem with Capital Xtra launching, just a shame they have to replace Smooth 70's.

DAB doesn't really seem to be in U105's interests right now so if they decide not to launch on the local mux it looks likely we could be getting 4 new stations, none of which would be local

Unless of course we get Radio Foyle or at least 1 RTÉ station?

Did a rescan today and Q102.9 is no longer on the local multiplex, which is a shame as I rather liked the station.

It had been blank for the last 3 or 4 weeks and I had been informed things were being upgraded and they were having technical problems, but they now appear to have left the multiplex completely.

So, now room for 4 extra stations at 128 kbps rather than 3.

Wish Bauer would fill up this spare capacity.

Capital, Heart, Gold, and Magic would be my choice.

Looks like they've gone for good on DAB.

    Financial reasons apparently.

I expected the spare capacity to have been filled by now

You would think Global would have jumped at the opportunity to stick Capital and Heart on there.

Yep, that's what I would have thought. The space was advertised earlier in the year.

I'd love to see Gold and Magic as well, but that's probably unlikely as Gold is being removed from a lot of local multiplexes. Magic maybe ? Heat could also be upgraded to stereo again.

Still, quite a lot of extra space now.

Can't see RTE appearing as they seem to be strapped for cash as well.

Yeah Gold is very unlikely because of the reasons you said. Magic though could be a possibility?

Can't imagine Heat going stereo, its mono on other multiplexes too. Bauer will likely put Kerrang and maybe The Hits on at 80kbps each like they have done in other areas.

No chance of U105? Would be surprised if they didn't take the opportunity

Same reasons as Q leaving apparently. Cost. They'll not be there unless they can cut a deal with Bauer, and since Bauer own Downtown (their direct competitors) it's probably unlikely.

I suppose being province wide on Freeview (even Freeview Light transmitters) is more advantageous than limited coverage on DAB.

Surprised the BBC haven't put Radio Foyle on yet as they did experiment with this a couple of years ago.

Even before Bauer owned Downtown Radio, the multiplex and station were owned by SRH and the likes of Q102.9 were still rivals.

Bauer have rival stations from the likes of Global Radio and others on their English and Scottish multiplexes, so I think it's safer to say that Q102.9 leaving DAB is for their own reasons rather than any manoeuvring from Bauer.

As for U105, apart from talkSPORT don't really seem that bothered about being on DAB if they don't have shares in the multiplex. The Wolf has never been on DAB despite there being capacity on the Wolverhampton multiplex. Juice 107.6 never launched on the Liverpool multiplex, but instead went DAB when the (part) UTV owned Wrexham & Chester mux lauched with overspill in the the Liverpool area.

Having shares reduces the rental cost.
Prroving enough DAB+;,enabled sets are sold UTV stations could go DAB+ on a mux to reduce costs,
    http://www.theguardian.com/media/2010/feb/03/utv-radio-two-tier-future
The UTV Radio chief executive said not enough investigation had been done of a rival technology, DAB+, which would have the capacity to transfer all stations to digital, including smaller local commercial broadcasters.

Room now for the 4 main RTE Radio stations, though I can't see that happening.

couldn't see rte being on the local mux in the near future. on another note don't understand why baur media don't advertise any spare space on the local mux in the local newspapers in n.ireland.

The space was put out to tender earlier in the year but so far no takers.

Or maybe Bauer are reluctant to allow competition for Cool FM and Downtown (i.e. Capital and Heart.).

I expect Global will want to eventually have Heart and Capital in NI to go up against the Bauer and UTV stations, but will probably want to setup a local ad sales and promotions office first so it can recover any publicity investment?

Q radio was part of a group of small FM stations submitting a document to Govenment

Which is odd given they've just left DAB in the province.

I'm quite surprised there hasn't been any changes at all since the extra space became available on the local multiplex.. I would have thought U105 and BBC Radio Foyle would have appeared by now.

Or maybe Bauer Media does have too much of a stranglehold here ?

Indeed, might be better than Bauer's feeble attempts. We really did wait an awfully long time for Digital One, and the fact that Absolute/Virgin was never on it was a disgrace.

Virgin was actually supposed to be on the local multiplex from the very start, along with Talksport but for some reason never appeared. Talksport only started when Primetime and 3C left.

I don't know what the hold up is with the new services..

Relatively newbie to DAB, and bit of a technophobe, so couple of questions.

    1) why do I have multiple copies of stations but only one that works e.g there are two stations labeled citybeat but one is 'not available'. Tried retuning but the problem persists
    2) can you not get normal Citybeat on DAB in December? Seems to have changed to a Christmas channel

On some models you may have to do a factory reset in order to remove the duplicates.

Citybeat is simply playing Christmas songs because it's December.

Although they've never done non stop Christmas hits before.

But only on DAB. On FM they have their normal channel

Yep, noticed their DAB service is now a dedicated Christmas channel playing non stop Christmas music.

Wonder if they put both on DAB temporarily since there's space to do this now ?
