I've said it before, but if the industry want to control the standards for 4K (and 8K), they need to come up with standards immediately.
With Chinese manufacturers looking to flood the market with hundreds of thousands of low spec sets this year, the opportunity to set high standards will be lost.
There is no 4K spec yet, and meeting a certain minimum spec doesn't make a crap set in to a good one, it's simply a crap set meeting a certain minimum spec (just like current cheap crap sets).
i agree , there are crap supermarket sets that adhere to the hd ready spec ,,,,,, yet have all sorts of problems , such as viewing angles , motion smearing , light escaping ,,,,, etc etc .
and im sure history will repeat itself , ,,,,,,, asda will eventually have budget 4k sets that have similar problems .
my point is though ,,,,, cash is king , and these budget sets WILL sell by the bucketload , to the masses on low incomes , just as current sets do now.
the problems ive listed above go largely unnoticed by the masses.
also , theres always the surprise piece of budget tech that punches well above its weight for the cash involved , the moto g for example is not a 600 quid smartphone , its a 100-150 one, but won gadget of the year with cnet , the telegraph etc etc.
all im saying is , get back to me once you've actually read reviews of the seiki/bush set,,,,,, and please take into account the proposed launch price , before denouncing it as rubbish .

Reviews are a complete load of crap anyway, and are generally based on advertising revenue.
But why would you expect these to be suddenly wonderful and high quality, when every single example of cheap badged crap before it has been just that?.
In many respects you get what you pay for - such sets are cheap because they are cheaply and poorly made, using low quality components.
it cant ,,,, thats what your 12months guarantee is for , or optional extension
and there are people that have owned bush sets etc for years without issue ,,,,,,,,, my m8 has a wharfedale set thats still going strong and he bought that yonks ago
independent reviews can tell you unbiased facts about screen res , viewing angles , motion , sound quality etc ,,,,,,,,,,, and you know this nigel
the seiki tv may well turn out to be a complete no go , it also just might surprise you and turn out to be a worthy budget alternative , for those of us without thousands to spend,,,,,,,,, the point is you cant denounce something as shit without first reading the reviews , and gathering the facts just because of some snobbish belief that all budget tech is useless .
the point is you cant denounce something as shit without first reading the reviews , and gathering the facts just because of some snobbish belief that all budget tech is useless .
So, in the face of every other cheap crap TV been crap, you somehow have this mystical belief that this one will be different - why would that be?.
Thanks for all the feedback, with the European specs still up in the air, I will probably leave it for the time being. I probably should have explained that I hire out av equipment including, plasmas, so can get the VAT back.
I totally agree with the higher quality hd tv sentiment, I have a top of the range (in 2010) thx certified Panasonic plasma, so it was more to have a play. I have seen the samsung demos in the shops and have been very impressed with the sets in the £30k region. The vizio sets have had rave reviews, it's just a shame they don't sell them in Europe!
If I do get bored one day and end up buying one, I'll let you know how I get on. But I'll more than likely hold out till sky have actually started to talk properly about linear content.
i think it is you that has the mystical belief that all cheap tv's are automatically crap
Can you provide any examples of ones that weren't?, and not just "my friend had ONE for years and it never went wrong". One example doesn't prove anything, it's the percentage of failures, and how long they last in the first place.
Cheap sets are cheap because they use cheap components, cheap designs, and cheap manufacturing methods - as a result their performance is inferior, and reliability even more so.
ok , look at the ( ***independent***) ''trusted reviews'' website ( i can try other websites if you like)
the kogan 19 inch ,,,, 8/10 , only £89
hanspree 32 ,,,, 8/10 , £199
the finlux 32 ,,, 9/10 ,,,,,,, startingly good picture , unbelievably good value ,,,,, a tv that rips the budget rule book to shreds ,,,, £199
lol ,,,,, do you want more nigel ?
so all these 3 dont look asthetically great , with plasticy bezzels etc ,,,,,and you can go on about build quality all you like , there are often exceptions to the rule , and also thats why we get 5yr guarantees for a little extra , or in some stores free,,,,,,
read their full reviews if you like ,,,,,,, they simply echo my point , that the average working man in the street can buy savvy cheap good tech,,,,we arnt all millionaire's nigel and that with a little research you will see that cheap doesn't always have to mean bad.
pull your head out of your pioneer arse , and take off your panasonic blinkers m8 ,,,,,,,,,
i like you and respect a lot of your opinions on ds m8 , but to say that all cheap tv's are rubbish , is beyond belief .
I agree price is no guide to quality, but what are these TV's being compared against. Is it others in the same price range, if so then yes some will be better than others, but against other brands they won't fare so well.
An example would be Aldi who compare their products against major best in market brands not the cheap end of the market.

Sorry, what do you claim to have proved? - you've listed three cheap TV's - I've never heard of Kogan (but have no recent to suppose it's a decent make), Hanspree make cheap unreliable crap, and Finlux is Vestel (another manufacturer of cheap unreliable crap).
lets leave it there then, you've already made your mind up , despite reviews from professional review sites etc ,,,,,,,,,, so its pointless , as nothing they say or i will obviously change your mind .
fair play to you ,,,,,, lets just agree to disagree .

You obviously have a LOT more faith in reviews than I (and anyone else in the trade) does
fair play to you ,,,,,, lets just agree to disagree .
no offence intended m8 ,,,,,,, lee.
Only way to go, but I would strongly suggest you check sets out for yourself, and don't buy based on supposed 'professional' reviews.
i would also add that reliability is a moot point ,,,,,,,,, with free or low cost 5 yr guarantees commonplace ,,,,,, it really isn't an issue
if my budget was only 300 quid say for a tv ,,,,,,,, ide sooner go with a cheaper set and longer piece of mind with a guarantee ,,,,, than a supposed better brand that could conk out at any given moment .

You generally don't get 5 year guarantees on cheap low quality sets, the manufacturers know full well the chances are fairly poor enough of them will last five years.

cmon nigel , that line is utter rubbish , and you know it ,,,,,,,,,,,, there's loads of independent reviews for things
And are they ever any good?
You're obviously easy conned
How can a VERY short term test on one example give any suggestion as to the reliability of a product?.
