1. A suspected arson attack this morning at a transmitter site in Bristol has meant the BBC local radio station for the city and Jack FM have both been off the air. Cables connecting transmission equipment to aerials were badly damaged in the blaze at the site on East Dundry Lane in the south of Bristol. The mast broadcasts BBC Radio Bristol on 94.9 FM and Jack FM on 106.5 FM. It’s also used for mobile communications systems, including for the fire service. Radio Bristol’s Weston-super-Mare transmitter has also been off air because it broadcasts a relay of the Dundry TX. The station’s Bath transmitter has been unaffected along with medium wave and DAB broadcasts. More

2. Eleven more community radio stations have each been granted a five year licence in Wales and the South West England region. Full Details

3. Ofcom has announced a full re-advertisement of the FM local radio licence covering Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead. It follows a declaration of intent to apply for it from the people behind Slough’s community radio station, Asian Star Radio. The licence is currently officially held by Tristar Broadcasting Ltd, which is owned by Sunrise Radio owners Litt Corporation, and broadcasts as Time 106.6. It has been known as Time FM since 2006 – before then was Star FM and at one time owned by UKRD. It launched in 1993, originally on the 101.6 frequency now used by Asian Star Radio, with a breakfast show presented by the now world-famous voiceover man Peter Dickson! It was based in Slough’s Observatory Shopping Centre, where the community radio station is now based following Time 106.6′s move to Sunrise Radio’s HQ in Southall in 2008. More

4. Part of the cuts announced by the BBC include 17 positions at Radio 1. In addition, nine reporter posts at 5 Live will go, whilst Radio 1 and 1Xtra will no longer have their own dedicated news services, except at breakfast. BBC News announced the loss of 140 posts altogether, which will be cut by the end of April 2013. They are part of the cost-cutting Delivering Quality First Programme, designed to generate 20 per cent savings over five years with the loss of 2,000 jobs across the BBC. More

5. Ofcom has announced the award of the re-advertised analogue local commercial radio licence for Bridgwater and West Somerset to Celador Radio. The station has been operating as The Breeze since August after previous station Total Star was bought by Celador. The licence term had previously been cut and re-advertised after Total Star was in breach of Ofcom rules on transmission power. More

6. Ofcom has opened the licensing process so that groups can apply for a community radio licence to broadcast in Northern Ireland. Applications cost a non-refundable £600 and the regulator is accepting proposals for stations on either FM or AM. Community radio licences in areas where there is a commercial radio station with a TSA of under 150,000 may have restrictions placed upon them in terms of their ability to attract revenue from advertising and sponsorship. Ofcom says no FM frequencies are available in the Derry District Council area so it won’t be accepting applications for community radio licences in that area. The closing date for applications in Northern Ireland is 5pm on Thursday 7th June 2012. More

7. The UK Government’s switchover date for digital radio may need some fine-tuning, as a new survey of car manufacturers reveals at least half are steering clear of the new technology. As part of its Digital Britain vision, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport named 2015 as the deadline for turning off its ageing analogue radio network, in favour of digital sets. The move would mean the vast majority of today’s in-car tuners would cease to work overnight. But slow take up, and new findings from Auto Express suggest the switchover could now be delayed until 2017. More

1. Sky today announced its intention to build on its significant commitment to original British content with a major new investment in feature-length British films for television. The investment has two distinct and complementary strands: new films for family audiences on Sky Movies and the best new documentary films on Sky Atlantic, which will be available exclusively for customers from 2013. The new productions will be broadcast by Sky from 2013. They form part of Sky’s on-going drive to bring more high-quality, exclusive content to customers and are supported by its commitment to increase investment in home-grown programming to £600 million by 2014, an increase of more than 50% over three years. 2. Rupert Murdoch is expected to leave the India news genre later this year with a major impact on its flagship Hindi news channel, Star News. Murdoch's Star TV India will be selling its entire 26 per cent stake in Media Content & Communications Services (MCCS), the company that owns and operates three news channels. The joint venture between Murdoch and Ananda Bazaar Patrika (ABP) Group has been treading a rocky patch for sometime, according to sources. More

3. The placeholder for Channel 4's new catch-up channel, 4-seven is now on the ArqB/COM6 multiplex showing up as channel 47. It does not appear in areas where switchover happens later in the year. More

4. Watch every second of the BBC’s 2012 Olympics coverage on Sky with the help of 24 brand new channels, dedicated to the London Games. More than 10 million Sky homes will be able to watch the 2012 London Olympics through two dozen brand new BBC channels which will be dedicated to the BBC’s live coverage of the games. In addition, more than 5 million Sky homes with Sky+HD set-top boxes will be able to watch the coverage in stunning high definition (HD), to make their Olympics experience even richer and more immersive. The innovative agreement will mean that Sky homes will have access to comprehensive coverage of this summer’s Olympics, with up to 24 live dedicated HD and SD channels running simultaneously at peak times during the games. The 48 brand new channels, which are being created specifically for the Olympics, will launch into Sky’s Electronic Program Guide (EPG) and will show every sport from cycling to archery, swimming to wrestling, tennis to the 100 metre final. Alongside coverage on the existing BBC channels, Sky homes will be able to enjoy 2,500 hours’ worth of live BBC coverage throughout the Games. Details more and here.

5. The Board of British Sky Broadcasting Group plc (‘Sky’ or ‘the Company’) announced that James Murdoch has stepped down as Chairman and will continue to serve in his capacity as a Non-Executive Director of the Company. Mr Murdoch is succeeded as Chairman of Sky by Nicholas Ferguson, who was appointed as a Director of the Company in June 2004 and previously served as Deputy Chairman and Senior Independent Non-Executive Director. Tom Mockridge, who joined the Board in February 2009, has been appointed as Deputy Chairman. Andrew Higginson, who has been a Director of Sky since September 2004, succeeds Nicholas Ferguson as Senior Independent Non-Executive Director. In a letter to the Board setting out the reasons for his resignation, Mr Murdoch said: "I have been privileged to serve first as Chief Executive and then as Chairman of this outstanding company and I am proud of what we have achieved over this period." 8. Virgin Media has announced that the company has begun its planned extensive program of broadband speed upgrades. This was first announced back in January, with many customers getting doubled up speeds thanks to a £110 million investment. The upgrade program will run over the next eighteen months, with this first batch of increases due to reach 1.5 million homes. Initial target areas include Newcastle, Ashford, Ipswich, Dundee, Belfast and Cambridge. You can check whether your particular area will be involved here 4 million household will eventually feel the cost-free benefit. All customers will see their lines speeds at least doubled, with 20Mbps subscribers actually getting tripled up to 60Mbps, with one exception. That’s the top-end 100Mbps users, who a doubling up isn’t feasible for, although they will see an improvement to 120Mbps. Full Details.

    1. At last, glasses free 3DTV. Toshiba’s 55ZL2 was announced last September, and since then, we’ve keenly been awaiting news on its UK launch date. And the good news is that the monster 55 inch set will be on sale next week at John Lewis, Toshiba announced on its Facebook page. The bad news is that should you want a piece of the action, it’ll set you back £7,000. So why is it so expensive? Well, this is a 4K TV set, in other words it has a resolution of a whopping 3840×2160 pixels, double that of a conventional 1080p HDTV. Full Details

    3. Adjustable depth and full HD quality could be available to 3D TV viewers from 2012 in a new set of broadcasting formats. The DVB Group, which sets the standards for digital TV in Europe and many other countries, is working on proposals to improve the current 3D TV experience. Top of the list for the Phase Two 3DTV standard are Depth Range Control and how to upgrade to Full HD detail from today's half-HD 3D. David Wood, chairman of the DVB commercial module, said he hopes to make the new standard available to broadcasters in the middle of 2012. Depth Range Control would allow viewers to adjust the intensity of the 3D effect, to make it comfortable for their eyesight and the room they're in. More

I thought it was launching in UK. Didn't Sky News UK advertise the channel a few weeks back as being available in UK!

Probably just an error but ocean finance (888) Has programmes currently unavailable from 6am next monday (could well be the EPG not updating for now though)
That concurs with what I heard from a little birdie that Ocean was shutting down on April 16th.... though I wasn't able to corroborate this.

EPG information for 'Ocean Finance' (888) has now been updated from the '...programmes currently unavailable' message to the '..programmes no longer available' message.

EPG info showing that its closing down at midnight on Saturday night / Sunday morning.

Strathclyde - did your 'little birdie' give any other details about whats happening with the EPG slot?

Press blurb doesn't mention 28.2 sats, only Arabsat Badr 4 and Nilesat 201. Though with the English langauge version of Al Jazeera already broadcasting to the UK there is no reason why Sky News Arabia couldn't. I'm sure BSkyB could soon find some room one of their many leased transponders if they so wanted.

EPG info showing that its closing down at midnight on Saturday night / Sunday morning.

Strathclyde - did your 'little birdie' give any other details about whats happening with the EPG slot?

Has the epg slot been sold to PaydayLoan TV ? :):):):)

I just Googled and didn't find anything. The website is still up and mentions nothing about the channel closing down. Maybe it's just a mistake.

Just surprised it mentioned on skynews.com when its not a uk based channel, and is irrelevant to us!

7 days it says in that article, 12 days later it's still not back on, gone for good?

You do know that SkyNews.com is not only for the UK right?

Sky News is broadcast internationally, as such the references to the website is bound to attract international viewers who may be interested in Sky News Arabia.

Ah! With alll this transponder swapping going on no wonder my box was on 998 this morning.
Got fair excited, thinking it was the new HD-EPG that's due (currently in Beta testing).

...is finally happening between 0500 and 0800 on Tuesday July 3rd.

All channels have been informed of their new positions on the EPG.

The Entertainment genre runs to 223 (Sky Arts 2 HD), which gives an indication of the squeeze effect.

Curiously, there are still a few gaps in some of the non-Entertainment genres.

Yes according to a thread in the Freesat section the above channels are testing in 1080p25 the first time this has been used in DSat in the UK!, very interesting if true, I didnt think the spec allowed it, I know ATM sky boxes only output in 1080i so perhaps this might change in the new update!
