I wonder if it would be too late for someone like that to develop a good work ethic.

This is what im thinking. As soon as I finisihed school at 16 my parents stopped giving me pocket money and told me I had to get a job, a week later I was working in a local hotel in the restaurant. It was awful, the money was crap and I would stink of food at the end of a shift, but I learnt the value of money.

We all have to do crappy jobs we don't like or want to do at some point, but its part of life.

    Good god!!!

What on earth's going to happen if, well I suppose when something happen's to his parents? He won't know how to do a thing for himself! Its shocking and his parents are to blame for treating him like that. What if they had financial difficulties? What would he do for money then?

    No idea...

As cousins, we share a grandad (my aunt and my dad are brother and sister) and he is appalled, and always complaing about it....

It is sad to say, but he will most likely outlive his keepers, and with no ability to manage his money, he will more likely than not be broke before long.

I don't see what's wrong with her having never worked. She isn't harming anyone.

If you want to earn an honest living and not live off handouts then it should be part of everyone's lives.

Sparkle is it possible to link to the article? Or what magazine was it? I am interested to get more details.

what makes you conclude that someone not working while studying is living off handouts? i didn't work through my undergraduate and postgraduate days. i borrowed money. is that a handout?

I think it was the Sunday Mirror celeb magazine. It was an article about a woman who had no 'work' clothes because she had not had a job before. Her wardrobe was full of hoodies and jeans because she was a student.

She was basically asking for a makeover ready for job interviews.

    I imagine you are right.

At family gatherings, my aunt will shamelessly tell everyone how she has bought him the shirt he is wearing, or the watch, or whatever it is that he has recently 'bought'

And he sits there without a flicker of embarassment

My self respect wouldn't allow me to do this, I would die of shame :o:o

Students don't GET benefits to cover university vacations. They can take out loans though.

Well I'd assume she's had loans and grants. It didn't say, I suppose she could have had wealthy parents though.

Thanks for replying. I am sorry to be questioning you!:o

Do you know what her degrees etc were in? Are they something very specialised, or is she going to work outside of the fields they cover?

I seem to remember that she had done one degree then done a masters and phd in that subject, then decided that she wanted to be a dentist instead so did a degree in that afterwards.

I suppose if she wants to be a dentist she won't be looking for a job long. The NHS are desperate for them.

Grants haven't existed for some time now, and as I said, students are not eligible for benefits. Just because she hasn't had a paying job does not mean she's scrounged or been lazy. She probably had loans. Maybe she did voluntary work in the summer, or was doing academic work. It is highly unlikely that she was sitting around on her arse doing nothing.
