I like Blue's version of Sorry seems to be the hardest word, as it actually suited a boy band. If Blue had covered another Elton song such as Rocket Man or Goodbye Yellow Brick Road then they would have murdered it
Karen Carpenters Ticket to ride is streets ahead of the Beatles version.
And the Pinky and Perky version of Rainbow Valley is better than Lovin' Spoonful's version.
Don't you mean Love Affair's version? "Rainbow Valley" is not the sort of song the Spoonful would have ever recorded, and Lovin' Spoonful songs are not the sort that Pinky and Perky would have ever covered.
One of Us, by Joan Osbourne. Prince did a cover of this on his Emancipation album, and made it sound much, much better than the original.
"Recently, we've been somewhat volatile
And last night it starts with that Joan Osbourne song
I hate it anyway but you made it worse" Arab Strap - Soaps
Hurdy-Gurdy Man - Butthole Surfers (originally Donovan) Touch Me I'm Sick - Sonic Youth (originally Mudhoney, Sonic Youth only narrowly edges it out) Sweat Loaf - Butthole Surfers (originally "Sweet Leaf" by Black Sabbath, for the lulz)

Oh dear The Beatles are just so superior to Karen Carpenter who always sounded to miserable on her songs.
As someone else has pointed out Rainbow Valley was by The Love Affair. The Lovin' Spoonful didn't record songs like that and I can't somehow imagine Pinky and Perky doing one of their songs.
People are Strange - Echo and the Bunnymen
House of the Rising Sun - The Animals
Wicked Game - London Grammar
Nightcall - London Grammar
Walk on By - The Stranglers
Feeling Good - Muse
Promise This - Adele
Wrecking Ball - London Grammar
And I like most of the cover versions that Eva Cassidy did
Wade in the Water, People get Ready etc
I must say that I absolutely love Amy Winehouse's version of Cupid. Even though I prefer the Sam Cooke original, it is still one of my favourite cover versions of a song

Me too, along with her covers of Monkey Man, Hey Little Rich Girl, and Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow. I still prefer the originals if I had to choose, but I like her versions a lot.

I'm surprised not many people have mentioned her version of Valerie. People forget that her version isn't the orignal
A lot of people don't know that Blue's version of Too Close isn't the original
Seems he did it for a film that wanted to use the song, but The Hollies wanted far too much money for their version.
Similar situation with "Nowhere To Run", originally by Martha & the Vandellas. The song was used in the film 'The Warriors', but they used this very decent version by Arnold McCuller.
HIM did a great cover of blue oyster cults classic 'dont fear the reaper', and (some would say a superior version of) neil diamonds 'solitary man'..... perversely lightforce covered HIM's 'join me in death' (as 'join me') a dance version which imho is equal to the original.

I used to like their covers of Solitary Man and Wicked Game as a teenager.

disagree strongly on both counts.
Bein' Green - Van Morrison (original version by Kermit the Frog).
There are loads of other covers of this song, from Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles etc. Possibly the most covered song by a frog?

I'm aware, I just prefer The Zutons' one.
I prefer their cover but it didn't occur to me to mention it.
Mention of SAHB reminds me of their 'Delilah' cover, and also 'Next', both classic performances on OGWT.

Just A Little Lovin'
I Only Want To Be With You live on Craig Ferguson's show
Nils Lofgren did a great Dusty cover too
Goin' Back

I do and think the cover is a pale imitation of the original
(Ducks for cover)
