My PS4 just had a heart attack

So there I was, in Emprise Du Lion, looking for another dragon to kill, when my PS4 started making a noise akin to HHHHRRRRRRRR, and the screen went black. I didn't know what was going on but I soon came to the realisation that the PS4 had powered itself down. I was pissed because I'd have to redo the part of Dragon Age again, since the last autosave.
I tried to turn it back on but it would beep, the blue light would come on for a second and power back off again. I left it alone for a while as I had St Patrick's Day fireworks to go to. Came back, tried turning it on again but the same thing - beep, blue light and then off. This wasn't going well.
I went onto Sony support, where they took my Pas4 reg number, and then it informed me that my PS4 is out of warrenty and if the online help couldn't help me, then I would have to pay €215 to get it fixed or replaced. WTF ? So I went through the support tool thing and it only recommended that I try using a different socket or using a different power cord. After that didn't work, it then said I had the option to have it repaired or replaced for the €215.
I am extremely pissed right now. I only got it in January last year. It gets a good bit of use but so did my PS1, 2 and 3 can anybody offer me any advice on what to do next ? Is there anything I can do ?
This would happen mere days before I get my hands on the Final Fantasy XV demo >:( >:( >:(

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it there but no joy.
You guys think this may be linked to the hard drive ?. Worth a shot, I just have to get my hands on one.
What are the chances of getting up tomorrow morning and it'll be working again after a good nights rest ?
I also read this http://www.idigitaltimes.com/ps4-broken-or-bricked-how-fix-blue-light-death-hdmi-issues-fragmented-hard-drive-and-other-launch
Hopefully this is not an emerging problem like YLOD/RROD, my experience with PS4 hardware so far has been a bad one. I am already onto my third system in a little over 3 months.
Aaagghh. I just took the HDD out and put it back in before reading this. I'll get my Philips screwdriver back out and report back.
No joy there. I took the HDD out, but I get stuck at powering it on as it doesn't really power on, the blue light just comes on for a second and then goes off. But I did all the steps anyway but it's still the same.
I don't think it's a problem with the TV as the console isn't powering up.
Oh it's torture. The missus is going down to Argos tomorrow to see about a replacement. I don't think she'll get anywhere but she's a bit of a bitch when she wants to be.
I'm a bit shocked at how bad the hardware is.
13 months is not acceptable ammount of time for something that costs £300+
A manufacturers warranty is in addition to your statutory rights, and your statutory rights say that goods should last for a 'reasonable' period of time. Pretty sure 6 weeks past warranty expiry is not a reasonable time in anyone's book. It's the retailers responsibility, so definitely have a go at Argos. They likely will try and fob you off with 'it's out of warranty' but this is not correct.
Hope you get it sorted.
You bought the goods more than six months ago
If you received the goods more than six months ago, you can ask for a replacement or a repair as long as it's reasonable for the goods to have lasted this long. But you will have to be able to show there was something wrong with the goods at the time of sale.
You can ask for a repair or replacement at any time up to six years after you bought the goods as long as it is reasonable for them to have lasted this long. If the goods go wrong after six years, you no longer have the right to ask for a repair or replacement.
You won't be able to get a repair or replacement if the fault is due to normal wear and tear or the goods have lasted for as long as you can reasonably expect.
Also, a trader doesn’t have to offer you a repair or replacement if it’s going to cost too much. You also don’t have the right to ask for a repair or replacement if you bought the goods from a private seller or as a business to business sale.
If the trader can't offer you a replacement or repair, they should either:
offer you a partial refund if you return the item, to allow for the use you've already had, or
let you keep the item and give you a reduction in price for the fault.
However, this will depend on the nature of the fault. These options may be practical if the fault is only minor, like a scratch. If it’s a more serious fault which makes the item unusable, you can insist on a repair or replacement. If this really isn’t possible, you can ask for a refund or for money towards getting a repair done elsewhere.
If the trader offers you a reduction in price or partial refund, the amount should be based on:
the value of the goods if they were perfect
how long you’ve had the goods for and how much their value will have gone down during that time
how big a problem it is to you that there is something wrong with the goods
whether it will be particularly difficult for you to find an equivalent item from another trader to replace the original one, for example if it is a very specialised item.
Argos were very good for me and swapped both broken PS4s without any questions. But I only got mine back in December so I am not sure how they are with a system out of warranty. I hope they manage to sort thing for you as the price Sony are asking for a repair seems very high for something which is barely a year old.
Oh hell no. Once they saw the warranty had expired they were having none of it. They couldn't have said 'you'll have to contact Sony' more times. The manager was no addition to the situation.
Sony were equally as unhelpful. The guy got very defensive as soon as he realised the warranty had expired. He gave me the option of having it collected for £175 or nothing. Really? I ring the Irish contact centre and you quote me in pounds, fool.
So I reckon I'm out of options. Thanks everyone for the help but I'm going to have to put this down to bad luck and shitty hardware. Grrrrrrr.
What annoys me about the price is that it's a flat fee. If the ps4s intestines are fried then it's £175. If a button is just stuck, it's £175. That's robbery.
I assume if I send it to them for repair then I get a new warrenty with it.
How stringently do they check, though?
Used to be lots of complaints about Protect My Bubble on here, have a look in the mobile phone section. I was going to suggest checking your house insurance but fairly sure these things would only cover accidental damage, not dodgy system death.
Very true... or easily fall off a table... or get paint spilled on it (that's a classic...)
