Reverting back to Sky + from Sky+HD

My subscription runs out in a couple of day's, so I decided to replace my HD box with my older Sky+ box to see what my viewing card allows, on the movie and sports channels it says that it's the wrong card for the box and yet I get the entertainment channels plus recording. Do you think that when the kill signal gets sent my older box it won't recognise the card and leave me with the entertainment and recording facitlity. I shall wait and see and give an update if it works come the weekend.

Just for the record, I hate the new epg on the Sky HD and prefer the older simple blue guide on my old box.

A valid viewing card can view entertainment and entertainment exta channels in any box, but to view premium content, like Sky Sports & Sky Movies, the card needs pairing to the box, which is why you got what you got.

What do you mean by your subscription is ending? If you have cancelled your Sky subscription, then you will be left with nothing, no Entertainemnt channels, no Recording, you will just get the free channels (FTA & FTV).

Without a sub you'll still get the main PSB channels in HD, so not worth changing the box.

In fact you will get more on the newer box than the older one, as the new one will bring in the free HD channels.

Kill signals as such are very rarely used on cancellation with the latest viewing cards. The cards are usually turned off by making the expiry date on the entitlements to the due date and this signal has almost certainly already been sent to your viewing card during the last month. "Kill signals" on their own were too easily avoided by removing the viewing card from the box for a certain length of time - most people reckoned two to three months on the old blue viewing cards.

You're better off keeping the HD box plugged in. As others have said, at least you get the FTA HD channels, For £10 per month you could keep the Sky+ facility, and therefore Anytime+ (On Demand)

Has this been confirmed. Anytime+ is a subscription sevice, and all but a few shows on there are subscription, so what would be the point?

Apart from the odd ITV show on there at the moment, i don't think there is much more.

As for the future, i presume even non subscribers will have access to iPlayer, not sure how, but the BBC won't be happy if people with boxes can't access the service without paying for something.

Being a subscriber they would also have access to the Sky Sore content of Anytime+.

Ach well, I might as well just take that box out bin it and replace it with my trusted simple Technomate which uses a fraction of power compared to the Sky boxes. I have a freeview recorder box anyway. To be honest, I hardly used my Sky HD recording function anyway and found most of Sky programming awful and not worth the money and that's why I dumped them. HD is all very well but no good if you can't stand the programmes which come at a premium and riddled with adverts.

Might as well bin the Technomate as well then, as that will get less than the Skybox, and if everthing on there was rubbish, a different name on the box won't help

Aye true, maybe I just havn't time for all that corporate rubbish, I pay enough for TV through my BBC licence anyway, mind you, the best programmes come from the BBC with no breaks. I like BBC4, does that tell you anything!!!

So how are the BBC HD channels 'riddled with adverts'?.

Using the Sky HD box with no subscription gives you access to exactly the same HD channels as any other box, and probably slightly more.

OK, except the BBC. You see, my Technomate has the ability to set broadcasts at their true aspect ratio and for some reason a much sharper SD picture and sound and that's through componenet leads, something that the SKY HD box can't do on SD channels. Another thing with the Sky HD box is that it's power hungry in comparison even on standby.
