I know many people on here enjoyed Wonders of the Solar System, so this is a reminder that the new series starts this Sunday (6th) 9pm BBC2

Can't wait either. I also recommend his book Why Does E=mc2? (with Geoff Forshaw) - which should tie in a little bit with the first programme. No doubt some barely literate poster will try telling us that its 'dumbing down' Einstein ;)

Also, if you don't have work on Monday morning, or you stay awake at night, Brian Cox will also be on the 700th The Sky at Night. (I almost wrote anniversary!). It's at 23:55 (11:55pm) in Wales, probably earlier in England. BBC Wales have a fear of science and shove it extra late whenever they can.

The book certainly doesn't dumb anything down! I looked at it in the book shop and decided it was too complicated for me (and I have a PhD!).

With TV, you have to pander to a common denominator just a little bit. I loved the thing he did with the coffee table representing the solar system, then driving a few miles down the road to show where the Sun's influence ends (on the same scale). That's exactly the kind of example that works well on TV.

I've been looking forward to this all week. I love this type of programme, although I do prefer more scientific explanations I understand why shows have to be made more accessable to Joe Public. But then this show (at least the Wonders of the Solar System) just answers things pretty perfectly with a good mix of scientific terms and on screen examples and demonstrations.

Thanks for the heads up about Sky at Night, I always forget when this is on.

I just found out that Sky at Night is at 11:25 in England. I am really looking forward to "Wonders of the Universe", actually counting down to it! 92 minutes left.

For those who cannot stay up after 9, Wonders of the Universe is repeated on BBC 2 England only on the 8th at 7pm.

It's not often you see something you didn't already know on one of the seemingly endless current series about the universe..........

But I'd never heard of that place in South America !.........:D

Did he not say the 21st of December was the summer solstice and 21st of June was the winter solstice?
He'd be right - he was in the southern hemisphere when he said it.

Used to Like Mr Cox, but sadly he is now a noise in the background.

He talks about the " wonder " but with no intonation of " wonder " and "awe".

If you dont enthuse the subject the students will just drift off.

He starting to sound like Leonard Cohen.

There is also a stuck pixel on the HD broadcast - is annoying in the space scenes (it's not present on Ch4 HD or the CBBC MHEG)

They seem to have gone for a cinematic, "arty" approach with some embedded science, which will not please some I guess.

The surround sound is making stuff in my living room rattle.

Interesting comparison as Cohen is one of the wittiest, ironic, inspiring, intelligent and gentlemanly performer I have ever seen
