american to english food measurements

Sometimes I come across very nice American food recipes which I never attempt because they measure everything in cups.

Not just solids but liquids too. Obviously in England we measure things in grams and mls so I find it very confusing .

I wonder if anybody knows with American solids what 1 cup is in grams ,for example.. flour, sugar, butter etc

Also cups of liquids , for example ..milk , what that would be in mls in England 100 mils or 200 mils or whatever thank you all in advance.

I would love to attempt some of the recipes but I'm not confident without knowing the exact conversion into grams and mls.

The barefoot contessa was on over the weekend and she used a pint of strawberries in a recipe. It's just plain silly measuring solids in pints

Well, a cup of lead would weigh more than a cup of feathers!

It's like the old line "A ton of lead and a ton of feathers weigh the same"
"Yeah, but which would you prefer to land on you from a height?"
    :p
(Please don't explain the flaw, it's a joke)
