How do I tell if it's downloading the update as I presume it will do it in the background?

Still nothing on mine, yet my partner has got it on hers.

Yeah it kind of surprised me. It must have downloaded it in the background, because it alerted me last night around 10pm that there was an update ready to install at about 185Mb. So it had already got the data, just needed my confirmation to install it. There was no other hint that it had been downloading this, despite the fact that I had been checking manually for the last few nights to see if this update was available. Kudos to Google for that I suppose, nice and neat.

Got the update on my N7, I don't understand why Google are keeping GEL an exclusive, it's such an Apple thing to do.

I did however sideload it from Android Police and it works fine.

Yes it reminds me a tiny bit of what Apple did with Siri. Older hardware is perfectly capable of running it but they kept it 'exclusive' to the latest handset.

I haven't got it yet but various Google updates have taken place this week, Google Keyboard being the most recent earlier today.

OK. Problem already. The KitKat thingy has installed and now my Nexus 7 won't open new android apps. The old ones I had already are fine. When I installed new ones. the installation process seems to be OK but when I try to open them I get the message "Unfortunately, "name of app" has stopped". I have uninstalled and reinstalled them but still the same problem.

    Any ideas?

I have just tried a third and this one is OK so I guess there is something wrong with the apps or compatibility or something with the previous two.

I've been checking my tablet every day since this thread started and I am just installing it now. I hope it won't prove to be a disappointment!

Hmm. I can't say it's made mine worse, but I'm struggling to find anything particularly better. Still, I'm glad it didn't bork it!

my (stock) email widget can nolonger be resized and forgets which folder it should be showing whenever i reboot.

widgets in general are not working properly. and it's very slow the browser has crashed and or frozen a lot since the update.

and there does not appear to be any benefit.

Have you tried a back up and reset , That's what Apple would suggest .
