Wii friend code?!

Hi everyone,
I regularly play online with my DS, Mario Kart Animal Crossing etc with my friends and am familiar with how to add people to play etc. However, with my Wii, I have played others online who I dont know, but am confused as to how I add people I know and what information from my Wii I need to give them in order for them to appear when I search for friends.
Is there a similar set up ie a friends code or do I need to give them my Wii number?
