What is the purpose of the first four digits of your card security number?

I've only *ever* been asked for the last three digits. The poor first four must feel so redundant. :( Do they even have a purpose?

They're just the last 4 digits of your card number IIRC, so you've normally already given them anyway.

Those first four digits on the reverse of the card are the same as the last four digits on the front. Maybe it's some sort of security device to include them on both.

Could it be because the front and the back are not printed at the same time, so the 4 digit number is there to ensure synchronisation of front and back? (I'm only going on how we used to print them 10 years ago)

^^ I assume this, it ties the front to the back
