You say you've only had the laptop since Feb and it's looking unlikely that you're going to fix it yourself. If you open it up you'll probably invalidate the guarantee. Is there any reason why you haven't been in touch with the seller? Let them fix it or give you a new one.

OP

Trying turning off Intel Speedstep in the BIOS too, I had regular BSODs until I turned it off, apparently it has problems with Win 7 x64.

I bought it from Comet, across the road from where I live, would they take it back or would they just tell me to phone ASUS?

I'll have a look and see if I can see that option later on.

They may well tell you to phone ASUS, and get it sorted via the manufacturer's warranty, however as the retailer it is actually up to Comet to sort out any problems, unless you choose to go via the manufacturer's warranty instead.

Your contract is with the retailer (Comet) not the manufacturer (ASUS).

Manufacturer warranties are in addition to your statutory rights as a consumer.

You could try and go after Comet under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended).

The Sale of Goods Act states that goods must be "as described", "of satisfactory quality", and "fit for purpose". "Durability" comes under "satisfactory quality", although how long an item should last for depends on what is reasonably expected for that kind of item.

It you want to make a claim against a retailer under the Sale of Goods Act, you have up to six years (in England, Wales, and N. Ireland) or five years (in Scotland) to do so.

If a fault develops during the first six months after purchase/delivery it is assumed that the item was faulty at the time of purchase...that it was inherently faulty. The onus is on the retailer to prove otherwise.

If a fault develops after the first six months, it is up to the consumer to prove that it was due to an inherent fault... or that it is a failure of durability as the item should have lasted longer.

You say you have had it since the end of Feb, so your are just within that first six month period...

The annoying thing is that, outwith hardware issues, I am pretty computer savvy and would never install anything untoward that would damage my laptop and I run Avast everyday etc.

The thing that puzzles me is that everytime there is a BSOD it throws up a different screen - it's not the same reason each time. Plus, the mem diagnostics will not run at all and all disks seem to be clear of errors...

Comet will just do a factory restore. It sounds like a Windows/driver problem to me.

You are better off backing up your data and trying a factory restore yourself.

I just took it back to Comet. They're going to send it off, so we'll see what happens. The guy I spoke to on the phone when I was booking it in for repair said it sounds like a hardware fault going by the BSOD messages I've been getting.

It better be, or otherwise I'll be charged through the roof to have it fixed!

This is why you should have restored to factory settings first. If it fixed the problem, great, job done. If not, you would at least be confidant that it was definitely a hardware fault. Chances are they might end up doing a factory restore, regardless of the actual fault.

Plus, has the OP given his PC to Comet with all his personal data on it?

I have no personal files on the computer and my internet history is off no interest to anybody. Plus, I don't save passwords etc.

I'll leave it up to them to sort it out. I didn't trust the laptop to do a full restore as it wouldn't even complete a System Restore without it saying that it had failed (even in Safe Mode).
