I want to see a British Asian Prime Minister, says David Cameron
David Cameron has said he wants to see a British Asian Prime Minister in his lifetime.
Mr Cameron made the remarks at an awards dinner in central London where Sajid Javid, the Culture secretary who is widely tipped as his successor, topped a power list of the most influential Asians in the UK.
Mr Cameron told the GG2 Leadership Awards: "Let us think big about what Britons of all backgrounds can achieve.
"When I hear 'sir', 'your honour' or 'right honourable', I want them to be followed by a British Asian name."
To cheers he added: "One day I want to hear that title 'Prime Minister' followed by a British Asian name."

BTW welcome back OP. Did you enjoy your "holiday"?
Do I ever really go way?
It's a big place.
Anyway, somebody wanting to be Prime Minister should be judged on his or her personality, not their skin colour.
Really, I'd kind of prefare it if they where judged on their politics, commitment to providing for the needs of all their constituants, to fairness and equality for all.
But I'm strange like that.
Thats definitely strange. The PM unlike a MP is more of a "projected image" the party would like to give at home and abroad. The PM really does need to have a good image. He is not just another MP. So yes, your view is a bit strange, for the job.
Why not a black disabled lesbian. Oh its because there are more Asians he could try to win over!
Paul Simon?
His restless eyes leap and scratch
At all that they can touch or catch
And hidden deep within his pocket
Safe within his silent socket
He holds a colored crayon
Now from the tunnel’s stony womb
The carriage rides to meet the groom
And opens wide and welcome doors
But he hesitates, then withdraws
Deeper in the shadows
And the train is gone suddenly
On wheels clicking silently
Like a gently tapping litany
And he holds his crayon rosary
Tighter in his hand
Now from his pocket quick he flashes
The crayon on the wall he slashes
Deep upon the advertising
A single-worded poem comprised
Of four letters
And his heart is laughing, screaming, pounding
The poem across the tracks rebounding
Shadowed by the exit light
His legs take their ascending flight
Why say this? Are Asians different?
I think what he means, in a coded way, that perhaps some nameless seaside towns with average age of 70, with a ukip leaning profile, might be Tory in name, but closit racist behind closed curtains. What he is saying is this "I wish I could put asian tory MPs in all my consituencies but, alas, some do have some racists, especially if elderly. It would be great if one day all Torys would vote for people of whatever colour - but this day is still not here".
Was what I was thinking. What exactly is a 'British Asian'? If they're born here, they're British.
Exactly.........he could always resign and campaign for her to be the new party leader and PM
That's actually fine by me but what I want to see above all is a competent prime minister and that criterion ought to be the most important issue and not someone's background or origins.
Me too but might be a few years before that happens looking at the current crop of party leaders
Just to play Devil's advocate for one moment the argument is that white people are complicit, either actively or tacitly, in keeping ethnic minorities from positions of power and from many positions in general. This is described as white privilege and is an attribute held by all white people even if they actively do not want it and deny it it is still there as a result of the action of other whites. The only way to defeat this is to actively ensure that equal representation is secured in all walks of life and all positions of power. Some advocate positive discrimination, some positive action, Dr Kamau Kambon in the US see the extermination of all white people as the only solution. It is an effort by Cameron to show that white privilege can be countered and countered effectively in Britain. Maybe he is trying to find his legacy.
It's. An effort by Cameron to garner the ethnic vote at the next election. Pathetic.
Has socialists ever looked into why some cultrual groups are very active in politics (jewish or eton culture) whereas other cultural groups (various chinese cultures) don't appear to be politically active. Or would it be racist to investigate why this is so. For example should Ed Milliband resign because his vague cultural group is over represented or would that be unfair because your birth is not your decision?
Where do you draw lines? Is it always after you're in? Or do you sometimes do the honourable thing and resign? Or should culture not be important - just get on with it...
On the other hand, i do get a nagging feeling that some torys are racist and will not vote for asian candidates.... This is a guess. I could be wrong/
